Default Tranny Drain and Fill question

I did the drain and refill yesterday on my 97 ES 300.. I drain it plugged it backed up and put in 3.5 qts... I checked the dip stick this morning after the car sat all night and the level was around the HOT mark but not that much but more on the Cold mark DID i over fill it.. I drained it just like you guys said Its running fine i just want to make sure that theres not more in the tranny then there supposed to be..I thought of pouring the fluid that i drained back into the qt. bottles to see if i took out what i put in?

Any ideas or I'm i ok Thanks guys

Tony

Did you check the fluid the next day after the car was idling & at operating temperature on a flat surface?

I checked it with the car off BTW.. after i drained all the fluid i tightned the bolt back up and then checked the dip stick while it was still on the ramps and no fluid was on the stick... So, i don't think i overfilled it..

You must check the tranny when the car is hot, at idle & on a flat surface.

"I checked it with the car off BTW.."

The transmission internal pump must be pumping when you check the fluid... This is accomplished thru the engine output shaft...The fluid level will read "high" on the stick if checked with the engine off ...It Must be running.

Sorry this is so late, just got done formatting LoL! Good for future reference tho!

A/T Capacity is 7.1 quarts.
Pan Drain & Refill is 3.7 quarts.
Transmission flush & refill 12+ quarts.

Line Pressure: Drive / Reverse
Idling: 58-66psi / 117-128psi
Stalled: 165-179psi / 249-269psi

Differential is 0.9 quarts.
The differential ATF is separate from the transmission ATF.

Also Sprach A541E Repair Manual.
(Thus Spoke A541E Repair Manual)

To check fluid level:
Drive until the engine & transmission are up to operating temperature (158-176*F coolant temp)
Park the vehicle on a level surface
With the engine idling & the brake pedal depressed, shift from P through all positions back to P
Check the dipstick (if you're a complete idiot & need to be told to wipe the dipstick, reinsert, pull back out & check the hot range re-read the post three more times before someone makes fun of you for being an idiot)

I had to purchase a tranny plug gasket at the Lexus dealer when I did my recent drain & fill with Amsoil. I asked the parts manager about the differential & he said for my 01, that everything was housed in one unit & there was no seperate diff plug. Can anyone confirm that? Nothing is mentioned in the owners manual either about changing the diff fluid.

Front Wheel Drive ... ES300 & RX300 U140E U150E Transmissions
Single drain plug on transmission pan - 10MM hex
Shares transmission fluid with front differential
Fills thru transmission dip stick tube... 3.8 Quarts, drain and fill
Does Not use GL-5 Gear Lubricant, Front or Rear

All Wheel Drive used in RX300 U140F Transmission
Duel drain plugs, one on transmission pan - one on front differential, both 10MM hex
Shares transmission fluid with front differential
Fills thru transmission dip stick tube... 4.1 Quarts;drain & Fill
Transfer Care and Rear Differential use GL-5 Gear Lubricant

My original plug gaskets were reusable and made of aluminum. I replaced mine with exact thickness made from copper bought at Pepboys.

Thanks Tammy! I was a bit worried the parts manager gave me bad info.......but from what you have posted (and what I could see under the car), I only have one drain location.
