Incorrect Gas Gauge!!!
Hi everyone,
I still have a few problems I am trying to work through on my 97 ES 300. This one is really starting to annoy me so I could use some help!
When I purchased my vehicle it had been siting for quite some time. When I fill up the gas tank the indicator only works correctly for some of the time and then it gets stuck. Right now it shows a full tank fine. It then works to about half tank and gets stuck. The empty tank indicator light does work correctly.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this. Maybe there is a easy solution????
Thanks,
SL

This could be a defective sending unit inside the gas tank. I'm not familiar whether there's a trap door inside the trunk to get to this unit, but if there isn't the tank has to be dropped to check it.

Like Alan, it could be either a malfunctioned fuel sending unit, or a blown capacitor in the instrument fuel gauge. I've seen this problem pop up once in a while in some of the '97-'01 ES. I even got a 2001 ES loaner with a bad fuel gauge, so I had to b*tch about it to the dealership after I returned it to them

Is there anything that I could do without taking the car to a mechanic?? If I have direction I don't mind giving most things a try!

Any way you cut it, it's no small job. If it's the fuel gauge you have to pull the dashboard apart to remove it, and if it's the sending unit in the gas tank you have to remove the gas tank. You should get a Shop Manual to tell you the procedure. Good Luck.
