I pulled mine this morning - thanx to this thread, I would have never knew there were 2 filters! Local auto supply didn't have one in stock, would have to order, $30 - I said I would check around and let them know. I did take a brush and air compressor to it and got it fairly clean, then sprayed it good with Fabreze.

the filter is still supposed to be able to go there just because it's not there doesn't mean you can not fit one, but im going to do one myself.

If you haven't got a filter, makes one wonder what the evap looks like! I swear I get noticable more air flow after I cleaned mine out, plus with the Fabreze it smells nicer also!

What i mean is that on a car like this it should be there in the first place.Maybe it's still like the planes they built in WW2.Pilot protection is always secondary.

I purchased a DENSO filter if I am correct for my 2001 ES. There were 2 filters in the box. One was a hinged filter (fold in half ) and the other was a unhinged (regular straight ) filter of approx the same size. I wondered why I got 2 filters and posting this cleared this up EXCEPT why one filter cannot be folded in half. In other words, how does this one go in. Did I get the wrong filter kit???

Would this replacement of the cabin/AC air filter aide in removing a slight smoke odor from the car, i.e. past what air fresheners, fabreeze, and other deodorizers do?

I just did this yesterday. Did not have anything in the compartment except for some leaves. I also did not unplug the electrical wire bundle because I didn't notice any tabs. The zip tie that is there can be easily undone. There is a tab on the zip-tie you can press on to loosen it and then move the wire bundle aside. It was a real pain to get the top filter in correctly, but once that is in, the bottom was simple.

I have a 1998 model.

Thanks to this thread, I replaced my 2000 ES 300 filter with Wix. Yes, it was a real pain in the a** but it's money well saved.

For the relatively small price differential between Original Lexus filters and these unknown filters, and especially considering that Cabin air filters should last you several years, than do yourself a favour and order originals.

You will know that you are getting top quality as well as a perfect fit.

This is a great write up! I replaced the cabin filters in my '97 ES300 (yes, it actually had them!) last night. The whole job took about 15-20 mins. The car already smells less 'musty' and dank when I turn the air on. I have no idea how long the old filters had been in there. At 195K miles, I figure this simple maintenance job was long overdue!
