My steering wheel has been cracking and is all faded so im thinking about change it. I alwayed liked how my cousins rx300 steering wheel looked and i was wondering if the 1998 es steering wheel could be converted to one like the rx300. Has anyone ever done this or know if this will work.

I'd be more concerned about the airbags (that is, if they are compatible with your model year ES). Another idea is to have the wheel re-stitched or re-trimmed with wood elements. Check out American Stitches for more info.

Yeah...good advice. You could also try to grab the airbag along with the steering wheel and hopefully it'll all plug and play.

Man, doing this trial-and-error fashion is the last thing on my mind if I were to do a steering wheel conversion. These airbags are not cheap, most averaging close to a $1,000 (go on Ebay for a price check). I would first ask someone, perhaps from one of the service managers at your Lexus dealership, about retrofitting different airbags to the ES. Just my $.02

I know atleast one of our members has an SC steering wheel with SC airbag fitted on his 97 ES. Personally, I took the safe path by installing a wooden ES wheel myself with my existing airbag. If I can remember who that member is, I'll post. I know he has a baby blue ES.

His name is MRLEXUS, and it's actually the wood factory wheel off of an '02-'03 ES. Here's an old pic of his setup.
