The antenna mast has a set of nylon teeth that are likely stripped. The exact same thing happened to me a month ago. Check out this thread:

Every time I start my car I hear this antenna motor making the mechanical noise but the Antenna stays in its place. I hear the same sound when I shut down my engine. Although the FM works but the sound is very annoying and it keeps getting wet every time it rains.
I went through the thread you had linked and it seems interesting. So what I gathered from there is that I will have to put a new Antenna in it? Can an average knowledge person do it himself without much hassels?
If yes please will someone be kind enough to let me know? Also does the antenna has to be purchased from ebay?

I changed my entire antenna from one purchased from ebay.
You have to do a few mods on the wiring but its really easy.
It didnt cost much more than getting the replacement mast.
Plus its brand new, smooth, and I can barely hear it even when Im standing next to it.
You can email me at yojl6365@yahoo.com for more detailed info.

If you can hear the motor, I would start by replacing the mast only (before going through the hassle of splicing in an aftermarket motor); your stock motor is probably fine (just do it sooner than later before it burns out from straining against the worn teeth). Search "antenna mast replacement" here, and you should find some helpful instructions from RX300 owners (which uses the same mast).

i fought with mine for a year because of the cost of repair. then on ebay i found the same manufacturer as what lexus uses. A friend bought it for me because he was tired of hearing that grinding sound everytime we drop to denver. $26+shipping is what it cost me. Just jump on ebay and get it. Took my dad and i less than 30 minutes to completely replace the whole thing. Beats trying to replace the guts or the mast. Replace it all....and it looks great.
