A lot of 94-96 ES's seem to have had problems with the A/C expansion valve. You may want to have that part checked out.

I think it's the expansion valve. If that's the case I think it'll just get worse until its fixed.

The expansion valve is located inside the car under the dash adjacent to the evaporator.

Problems with this valve are very common on first generation ES 300's. As I understand it, the valve sticks. There is apparently no fix other than changing out the valve.

I had mine repaired by a local auto air conditioning facility. The cost was about $425.00. This included replacing the receiver-drier, evacuating and recharging the refrigerant, and leak testing. The local Lexus dealer wanted $700.00 to do the job.

This is not a do-it-yourself job. Special tools and AC expertise are needed.

my 95 es would blow ice cold for about an hour then start getting warmer until no cool air. Also started with warm air only from driver's vent
It was also the EXPANSION VALVE, mechanic could not diagnose until I got the car to do it and brought it to his shop and left it running out front. Within the first hour when it was working, mechanic could not diagnose.
expansion valve replacement fixed it perfectly. Mine cost around $250 for repair(local mechanic)

try to get it to an ac shop or good mechanic when it is acting up & have them hook up the refrigerant high low pressure checker gauge thing they use.

There is nothing to be gained by adding refrigerant unless the system has a low charge. Have you checked for bubbles in the sight glass?

The expansion valve problem has nothing to do with the refrigerant level. I had the pressures checked several times while my car was having AC problems, and the refrigerant level was never low.

yah, the prssure test thing is not just to check the amount of refrigerant-they can also tell if the expansion valve is working right by the pressure changes.

Just go to a reputable ac/radiator shop. I cant see them charging more than $50 or so to check it out

Help?
First....before you do anything else......make sure the belt driving the compressor is tight and not slipping.
If the belt is OK.....then make sure the compressor clutch is engaging and actually spinning the compresor. If that is OK......THEN start to look at the R34 level or expansion valve.
