Default Strange Brake Noise ???

I have a 2000 es3, and I have lately been experiencing some strange brake sounds. They are not the high pitch sounds that people normally associate with brakes. Instead, it has a strange metal clamping sound. My only guess is that the sound i'm hearing is the sound of caliper tightening its grip on the rotors???

This tends to occur when at slow speeds (idle-10mph). I have aftermarket wheels and I know that they are heavy but I know there are people out there with heavy ones and they don't have the same problems. Thanks Guys and Gals!

usually you hear rubbing metal noises after getting new brake pads. it's been 2 monts since i got them replaced and they still make noise, but then again i don't drive too often. it could be your rotors are warped. my mom's car made a weird noise around 10-20mph and it was indeed the rotors.

Is the sound like a "clack" or "thud" when you apply the brakes? If so, it's just a relative Toyota design flaw beginning with the Camry (and related platforms i.e. Avalon, Solara, ES etc etc) starting from 1992 through present. Even my 04 IS300 occassionaly makes that same noise but not as audible as my previous 95 Avalon and 99 Solara.

I'll look into the warped rotor thing, but the thud sound flipside described is not what i'm hearing. Thanks guys!

Not just Camry-related platforms. I had a 1995 Celica that did it and have also seen some Corollas and Tercels do it. So does my 2001 IS300. As Flip indicates, it is a common Toyota characteristic.....as you change direction from a standing stop, the first time you touch the brake pedal, the caliper pad assemblies shift slightly and hit against their stops with a muted clack or tap noise. Usually it does not do it on a brand-new car but starts within 2000 miles or so. It is annoying but harmless.

Cool

Not a rotor flaw. If they're warped you'll feel it in the pedal.

I did a thread aboiut changing mine. Very easy & FYI I have never experianced this with a '93 corolla, or this '93 ES.
