Default Guess the lighting manufacturer - PROS ONLY!!

I say "pros" because many beginners won't know what they are.

Manufacturer guesses?

HINT. NOT Profoto. Or anything less than $10,000. You'll find these being used by high end gigs from Lady Gaga, Victoria's Secret, etc.

Another hint - Parabolic reflector from Germany.

I'm not at this level. The modifiers I'd use are small time to this one. Not Profoto, only other that would come to mind that is big $ is Broncolor.

Good guess! Broncolor copied these guys. But it's not an exact copy as the lighting sources are quite different with regards to their light path.

A bit back we watched a K-drama where the lead character was a fashion photographer. This was one of the studio scenes. Amusing was the use of the 1DX prior or just around release time ~March or April of '12 and the G1X. Have seen a variety of gear in K-dramas prior to mass availability.

Yeah...looking at this gear is dream stuff. Wallet hurt for anyone but full time peeps in that area. For those photographers, the expense is worth it. That said, for quality and consistency artificial means makes life easy. Some gear is night day at the results and the sets can be repeatable. Percy's work details more involved lighting set-up's and clients at that level expect the gear.

One of the product photographer's I talked with at a Vegas PMA/PPA show was telling me his client list for the year had allowed him to make big changes. At the show he had put in purchase orders for about $250K in gear to upsize his studio.

One of the local guys that shoots motocross and similar motor sports buys 6 bodies/year. His frame rate varies but he said average is 80-100K actuations/month. At the time, he was picking up 2-1D MkIV bodies. He's had standing orders for bodies. I haven't seen him in a spell but would anticipate if still with Canon it is now the 1DX he's buying.

Can be pretty crazy at the expenses.

Question is for things like this do folks buy used or new (most of us peeps always buy used cameras, flash, and lens)

Depends. Photographers working in the business can buy, lease or rent. A full time photographer will have a client list to support gear purchases as needed. Those coming into the business may buy used to save. For those learning the craft, buying used saves $ and to get a feel.

My recent gear purchases have been new. Regularly used gear pays for itself so buying new is the choice. Less used gear is simply avoided and renting is easy for those situations.

Renting for most pros is the obvious solution. Briese however, has no distributors in the US or showrooms that you can walk into. Since they are so rare and difficult to find, I bought my setup. In fact, Briese tells me that I'm the only one in the Chicago area.

One of their SMALL parabolic umbrellas, umbrella itself, sells for about 5 grand. Then everything else is added from there. Budget at least 15 grand to start for a single light, power pack, etc. All hand made.
