Default dedicated cameras vs. cell phones - colliding

with cell phones getting better and better cameras, lenses, even fairly useful flashes on the latest models, how is that impacting dedicated cameras? i think in a big way.

the biggest down side to a dedicated camera is the hassle of actually doing something with the images. most people want to share them via e-mail or facebook or a forum, etc. with a dedicated camera that's a royal pain - connect to pc/mac or use card reader - resize the giant file, then upload/send to wherever. want to do the same on your cell phone? take the shot, pick 'share' or similar, done!

i think it's time for camera manufacturer's to build in wifi at least so the cams can connect to the internet and you then can put pics of vids straight online from the camera and forget a pc/mac entirely.

your thoughts?

I know that Amy and I take and send pictures between of the baby to send to each other and sometimes load up to Facebook.

Times though I see the aftermath and wished she had pulled out the camera to get a clearer sharper image.

iPhone4 camera...pretty killer!

There are already P&S cameras with WiFi built-in. i.e. Nikon Coolpix P-series. Sony, Canon, and I'm sure some others also have their own. There are also WiFi memory cards that will automatically upload whatever you take to a pre-set location.

For my phone, a BlackBerry Storm 2, the camera sucks compared to even a 5-year-old point and shoot IMHO. Therefore I only use it when I know I need to send the photo on the spot. If the image can wait and I have other cameras with me, I don't use my phone camera.

But when you're outside though, how many free and secure WiFi hot spots are there for you to transmit your images?

Plus, how often do you NOT edit your photos?!

I guess I'll stick with the dedicated camera if I'm at all interested in the quality of the shot. You can never predict if there is something else you'd like to do with it after taking the shot.

I know some newspapers, like the Las Vegas Review-Journal, use Canons equipped with WiFi to send pictures instantly back to the offices so they can be uploaded instantly to the websites. But these are high-dollar, purpose-built units, not just for casual sharing.

If your DSLR uses a SD card, one of the card manufacture makes a wi-fi card that you can use to send images directly to your computer over the air. i forget who makes it. Too bad most Canon bodies dont use the SD format (except for the 1 series).

Horse for courses me thinks.

To share snaps of people and family or from holidays those cams do fine and indeed very convenient to send off or load to the net.
In that sense it will have an impact on dedicated cameras, those of the lowest price and quality however only.
Some people might decide that they do not need a seperate digital camera.

anybody who want to take 'real pictures' (apart from holiday-people snaps) will still go for a dedicated camera, even if it is a point and shoot compact.

However anything

examples given of using wifi on sd cards etc. are all about FTP'ing images to an ftp site. don't know if cameras allow direct upload to facebook, youtube, flickr, etc.?

I've don't understand people's love of camera phone's. Sure I can take 8MP photo's with my EVO, but are they really worth it? These are quick snaps that usually look like garbage anyway. I just started shooting, (I picked up a Nikon D3000 and I have no camera experience what so ever), and I carry it around with me where ever I go. It's light and portable enough that if I know I'm going somewhere and something might happen I'm ready. Wait........ Evo 4G, Eye-Fi Pro X2 SD card and PhotoBucket app means I can snap, upload, edit, and post where ever I am. I'm on my way to BestBuy.

It all depends on what the shooter wants. If the images off a phone will suffice for that particular person, there's no need for him or her to have a dedicated camera.

For me however, I definitely need a dedicated DSLR. I got way too spoiled with what RAW images can do; so I shoot only full sized RAW and small JPEGs, that's me though.

the way i see it, camera on the phone is only good for 'record keeping', e.g. if i see or read something i wanna remember, instead of writing it down, i'd take a snap shot for quick reference. Any real picture taking has gotta be done with a 'real' camera.
