Default NHRA World Finals @ Pomona Raceway

Let me just start off by saying, if any of you have the opportunity to attend a Top-Fuel event you should definitely go. Seeing a car fly by you at over 300mph is quite a thrill, and the sound they make--it sounds like the world is ending. It's definitely an awesome experience. With that said, I did manage to take a few pics. A buddy of mine let me borrow his EF 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS, so that's what I used for the whole event.

1.) There was a wildfire going somewhere in northern orange county, which sucked.

2.) It is nearly impossible to get a clear picture of these cars racing, they're just too fast. I did my best...

Thanks!

Larry Dixon won Top Fuel and Cruz Pedregon won Funny Car. I had never heard either of those names before attending the event.

3.83 1/4 mile times? NICE. I haven't been to one of those events since '97. Back then I was hauling two Canon EOS 1 series bodies, 80 rolls of film, 28-70 2.8L and the 70-200 2.8L with the 2x and 1.4x extenders.

Eight hours of 90 degree heat. Your shoes feel like they're melted to the ground. Lots of running around from pit to pit. Women everywhere and they loved to pose for the camera.

Dixon and Pedregon have been around a long time! Back then I was always trying to get shots of John Force. He's a NUT!

By the end of the day you're pretty much deaf from all the loud engine noise. The sound pressure, at over 100 feet away, still pummeled against you. And everybody was soaked in rubber chunks and nitro methane fuel. The cameras would get so hot from the direct sun that many of the Nikon users, with their black lenses, couldn't hold them for very long. The Canon guys kept shooting since their lenses never heated up nearly as much - the white lenses are more than just a "trademark".

I would burn ONE ROLL of film PER RUN. 3.6 seconds later, I would have gone through the roll. That was with the Canon EOS 1n RS. A 10 frame per second camera, and that was back in the mid 90s!

Keep on shooting Tony...you're improving!

Thanks Percy! I think they were saying that the last time Pedgregon won a championship was back in '92 or something, so yeah, he's definitely well-seasoned. John Force was at this event, but he was racing in the Funny Cars, not Top-Fuel. That nitromethane is nasty stuff, I can't imagine hauling all that equip. around and putting up with those conditions, but at the same time it sounds kind of fun, especially considering all the pretty ladies at an event like this.

For safety reasons, they actually shortened this track to 1,220 feet, so the times you're seeing aren't quite right. On an actual 1/4-mile track they'd be hitting around 4.0's and trapping a bit closer to 330mph I think. Still rather insane. Even up in the stands, wearing earplugs, the sound is still crazy. I thought I would get used to it after a while, but every time those cars go by you is still freaks you out just as much. :O

Yeah well they are a couple of old guys, but like Percy said they have been around the block a few times.

Percy, you nailed it on shooting drag racing. I covered several Import drag races for the magazines back in the day.......samething. At least the imports were a little easier on the ears, and didn't shake your insides like the T/F and Funnycars did.

Back then Shaun Carlson was a photog for Turbo magazine then, he built and started racing a Civic, now he is driving a Pro Stock in NHRA.

Living that dream baby!!

I feel like my shots of the 6-second cars came out pretty decent, it's the 3 and 4-second cars that are damn near impossible to shoot. My little XT can't even focus fast enough when those cars are flying by.

Your panning shots are right on Dude.
Next time for the super fast cars, pick a spot on the track in front of you that you want to shoot the cars on. Focus on that spot, now don't touch the focus button, pan with the cars and just before they get to your focused spot, you start shooting, they run right into focus and you just follow them on down the track.
