i researched for about 4 months before i went. i did a lot of cross referencing on places of interest and overlayed transportation aspects over them. transport over there is very different, especially without a car. it's on time, and gets you exactly [sometimes] where you want to go. then i read and read. the places that i found interesting, i went to. only in the end i had one day with a highschool classmate take me around the business district of tokyo. it took about 3-4 days to get my bearings.

Wow! I must say that I am impressed. Can you read/speak Japanese? My limited Japanese would not help if I decided to go on my own.
