Nikon D3 vs Nikon D200 vs Canon 1Dm3 - THE SHOWDOWN.
Same optic. Takahashi FSQ106 - 530mm f/5. WORLD CLASS OPTIC. Schneider, Zeiss, Canon L, Nikon ED, Leica APO would be a SECOND RATE lens compared to this. More on this later, with the results.
Same software. Capture One 4.
The contenders ...
Nikon D3. Much talked about in high ISO noise free performance. Also, many "expert reviewers" on how "pin sharp" the pictures are. Does it deliver?
Canon 1D M3. Also a high ISO contender. Up to 6400 iso.
Nikon D200. Thrown in, just for kicks.
Coming soon. Tests have already been done. Just need the time to put the files on the computer.
Any bets?
Also a test between the Nikon 400 2.8 w/1.4x vs the Takahashi FSQ. You'll be amazed at the difference between the two.

Nada. You want the lenses to be THE SAME. That's why I did it this way. There are too many "so called experts" that are using a DIFFERENT lenses for the Nikon vs Canon. And DIFFERENT software.
The different lenses/software introduces too many variables.
And "excuses" that "gee...that's not Nikon or Canons sharpest lens".
NO EXCUSES.
This is the closest you'll get to a fair comparison...a real comparison.

And now a word from our sponsors before the big match....
Nikon D3, Takahashi FSQ106 on 3047 head and Gitzo 1325 tripod. The guys asked "how heavy"...15 pounds for the scope alone. Big. Beefy. Precision.
ALL the pictures were shot with MIRROR LOCKUP. ALL were shot with 14 bit. In the case of Nikon, their NEF file, UNCOMPRESSED. In Canons case, their CR2 series files, RAW.
The target. See the piece of paper to the right of the bookshelf and just above the light switch? That's our target. A page from a dictionary. Probably 10 point font if you're lucky.
Distance is 20 feet via tape measure. Lighting is consistent during the time the test shots were taken.
Remember - mirror lockup for both cameras. Don't want anyone saying that "gee...blurred photo or soft photo due to vibration". There is none caused by mirror slap.
BOTH bodies focused using their "live view" mode at MAXIMUM magnification. Triple checked by each person there.
Adapters for the FSQ are used. Nikon F and Canon EOS. Remember - same optic.
Here's the catch. You're dealing with different crop ratios. 1.0x vs 1.3x. BUT, the focal length is the same. Disregard the sampling. If all things were equal, the Nikon should have a higher signal to noise ratio due to the larger size of the pixels.
Processed by the same software. Levels of brightness and contrast were changed. SHARPNESS WAS NOT TOUCHED. NO USM APPLIED. This is as "out of the box" as it will get folks.
