More Mods: Headrest Tablet Mount
Continuing my Mod quest...
I looked at just about every tablet mount on the market that mounts to the headrest posts for rear entertainment. All of them had three fatal flaws: 1) they were made of ugly cheap looking plastic, 2) they are primarily designed to be taken off when not in use (back to point #1), 3) the only nicely designed one fit Apple products and required you to utilize their expensive case to mount your tablet.
There was only solution...build my own. One that could stay on the headrest all the time and look awesome and utilized a mounting system that would allow the kids to take the tablet easily off and into the house or restaurant and continuing gaming or watching their movie.
My mount is made of 3/4" bamboo and matches the front bamboo dashboard trim (yes I bought that too...thought about making my own) and fits the posts perfectly. It's about as minimal in size as I could design so that there was still a bit of movement in angling the 7" tablet to the passenger preference. I used 1/8" cork to line the inside of the clamping part, which provides just enough grip that you can still slide the headrest up and down if you want. Naturally, you can adjust the stainless cap socket screws to adjust clamping pressure if you want.
The magnetic ball and socket mount is from a kickstarter funded company called Steelie and they have phone sockets and other accessories as well.
So far, my kids love the mount and it looks great installed. What do you guys think?
Upcoming Mod: Electromagnetic rear parking sensors
