As for the current 2.4L HSD engine, my guess is that Toyota is trying to dump the excess supply of 2.4L I4s before switching everything to the newer 2.5L. By the time the HS is refreshed and the Camry redesigned the 2.4L HSD powerplant should be retired.
there is no excess supply of anything, let alone engines... they are built when needed, as everything else in TPS.
However probable reason is R&D costs... they developed 2.4l HSD engine, and it has to pay itself off. They can not change engines every 2 years, R&D and other costs need to amortize.
