Default Twice now.. push power on and the whole engine compartment shakes and makes noise

2011, oil just changed a few weeks ago at dealer, everythinig checked came up green, tires rotated regularly.

It was scary the first time, I banged the power button off as fast as I could. Pushed the power button again and everything was silent as always.

Second time was today, many months later, pushed the power button and the engine and whole front of the car under the hood felt like it was shaking and banging, then a second later it was gone. This time I didn't turn the car off, just waited to see what would happen and it went away and car rode fine for the rest of the day.

I want to take the car in but I have absolutely no idea how to replicate this, it's only happened twice over several months. I wouldn't know what to say, "It shook twice, but you wont hear it again when you test it out"

Sounds like it is a really cold start. What was the temp outside?

This happens with our new 2015 Camry hybrid over really cold winters. I haven't driven my CT in the winter yet so I haven't noticed it but I can say that it is common, and I wouldn't be too worried.

Sounds like it happened to him a few months back when temps were warm, so that's a concern. If this was alarming enough to cause you to turn the engine off, it seems significant enough to address it. What kind of mileage do you have on the odo? Even if you can't replicate the condition, I'd still bring it to the dealer's attention.

From reading Prius forums this sounds about right, it seems to be a fairly common thing among owners to spawn a bunch of threads everywhere. Also looks like Toyota has offered no fix of any sort.

To answer the temperature questions, it wasn't that cold of a morning. Last year when it was -5 F a few mornings it never shook at all. This morning in particular it was maybe in the 30s.

Just had this same thing happen to me this morning. I left the car sitting for a week while I used my motorcycle instead. My wife walked into the garage right as I turned it on and she looked really alarmed, asked if that was normal.

My second thought for the cause of the rumble is a stuck EGR valve.
The valve connects the exhaust to the intake to help reburn exhaust gas.
It should only open after the engine is warmed up. It may be stuck open and causing the hard start.
There could be a leak somewhere in the intake for another reason.

But usually a bad EGR would also cause a bad idle while stopped.

I never had a bad EGR on a toyota, but I have on chevys and it would cause bad shaking on startup.

Good to know about the egr valve. The idle problem might be less noticeable on the hybrid system, since our cars don't idle much after warming up.

That's the similar sound I got with our Camry. It usually doesn't last really long, isn't that loud either hahaha. I don't even know why it does that either.

Yikes! That sounds terrible!

I see this is a common problem discussed in various Prius forums. They discuss a TSB referencing a manifold replacement. Apparently, caused by moisture build-up in the manifold after shutting down the vehicle before proper warm up and then starting the car again.

Had the same thing you describe happen to me over a year ago on more than one occasion. It was so violent that I too shut the car off just out of normal reaction, metal to metal noise, car shaking excessively, then about 10 seconds later it's fine. Had this happen to me a few times, but only once from what I recall it was really bad.

I started to record starting the car every morning for the next two weeks, but of course it would never do it. Temperature was not cold by any means - 55-70 degrees.

After getting off the phone with tech assistance it was either the EGR letting moisture into the engine, and or a possible manifold replacement. All I replaced was the EGR, and after doing that it's been good. I have a rough start on occasion but not anywhere near as bad as that one time.

Here are a few pictures of the EGR with 59,8xx miles on it, it was pretty gummed up with carbon. The EGR I installed was a updated part number.

I've cleaned EGR's as preventative maintenance on other vehicles. Good news is, a bad EGR *shouldn't* cause any damage to other components. Emphasis on "shouldn't". As an EGR is part of the pollution control system, it should be covered by warranty for a long time. In Canada, that would be 96 months or 130,000 kms

Where is the EGR located on the CT? I would love to pull it out and clean it. Thanks.
