The whole concept of better MPGs in Sport mode really only applies to highway driving. In sport mode, theoretically, you use less gas getting from 0 - 60 either in stop and go traffic or on freeway ramps because it is slightly faster to get from 0-60 in Sport mode vs eco mode.

In my opinion, if you have a heavy foot, it doesn't really matter which mode you drive in. You will end up getting around the same mileage in all three modes. What the Eco mode really does is makes it easier for you to maintain the throttle in blue zone. So personally I prefer this mode when I am doing pulse and glide and when there is less traffic.

Wow - that is great! How are you doing that? I am not even close - usually around 46 to 48 with a mix of 50 freeway/50 local driving.

Default Higher MPG

I have a hilly "country roads" commute of 80-100 miles round trip every day. I use Sport only when merging into fast moving traffic. When I get up to speed, I switch to normal mode and drive with an apparently light(er) foot. Pop the "Chill" station on XM and enjoy the drive. I really like this vehicle -- very comfortable to drive, it has the right amount of tech, Enform is wonderful, and the MPG can't be beat!

Hyper mileage experiment (5 miles) driving in slow to medium speeds (which gets better mileage than highway driving). 25-45MPH zones.

A/C compressor was off, and tires were at 36psi cold.

Anyone getting more than this is either driving like a grandma peeking through the steering wheel in her Buick or is lying! (IMHO)

This is NUTZ - you must be driving like a grandma...hahaha - is this only for 5 miles of driving???

I told my wife who has a very light foot about some of the MPG's you guys are getting and no matter what her best is at most close to 47mpg!!! Her commute is about 70 miles each way and almost all highway. She does have some hills and headwind going into the valley so it's not all flat ground. ECO mode all the way.

I took this picture this as I arrived at my office (borrowed her car). My commute is about 14 miles with a mix of highway and local:

We have NEVER gotten even close to 50mpg let along 56!

What the heck are you guys doing? Are you using premium fuel? My wife did note that when she fills up at Shell she seems to get better mpg.

Btw all of these tests are with no A/C on and windows closed on the highway between 60-70mph.

With the Prius and CT I've found that MPG is very dependent on the trip length and speed.

My wife drove her Prius for 5 years on a commute trip that was 12 miles with max speed of 45mph. She averaged mid 50's. When her commute trip changed to 3 miles the mpg dropped to high 30's.

Our CT does 40 mpg at 72 mph and 43 mpg at 68 mph, just slightly worse than our Prius. (no wind). All this is with the Air Conditioning on. The only way I can see getting better at these speeds Is with a tail wind or going downhill. With the CT the limiting factor is Parasitic Drag and Tire Rolling resistance.

The last trip in our Prius clocked 72 mpg. This was a 3 mile trip with a fully charged traction battery from the gas station to home, traveling at 40 mph.

Just drive and enjoy the Experience. BOY, THE CT IS SO MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE THAN A PRIUS!

Are you talking best mileage for a 300+ run on a tank of gas, or best mileage over a smaller drive?

The day I picked up my CT, I drove home and babied the car, not driving over 60 mph on the highway. The 30 mile highway/10 mile city driving gave me 53 MPG.

I've had my car now for 1 yr. and have 25,000 miles on hit. I hit traffic on the highway last week, about 15 miles from my exit for my house, but I then live about 8 miles off the highway, so this mileage isn't purely battery power and me arriving at home with a low battery, it's all from regenerative braking and EV mode kicking on. As soon as I hit traffic, I reset my trip MPG meter to see what I would get (as I ALWAYS get amazing mileage in show moving traffic). Conditions were ideal, windows open and no fan or A/C was on. I'm not making this up and I didn't just hit the button and coast down a hill (as you all know that gives you a 99.9 MPG reading)! That dusty stuff is pollen, we've been getting KILLED with it here in New England the past 2 weeks!

First time driving our 29 mile RT commute 75% fwy with cruise set at 72mph. Slight decline going into town and slight incline coming home. We got 52.4 mpg going into town and it dropped to 42.4 mpg total for the RT. New car set on eco mode driving conservative but not like grandma.
