The traffic going through San Juan Capistrano is the worst I've seen in SoCal. And that says a lot because I live in the West LA area where there is always heavy traffic.

Use the 15 freeway. Even coming to and from LA I use the 15.

it still depends. last time i saw 5 being really bad, i took 15, it's around 10 miles more on the trip, and didn't really got me there faster

Dad insisted on driving I-15 to SD, I haven't mapped the difference and I also recollect that it really didn't save time. The traffic heading onto Arizona to catch I-60 is not much better. Lots of trucks-RV's towing jet skis, boats, motorcycles and the regular truck traffic are Lake Elisnore as well as Rancho California Rd at Temecula is pretty crowded. CHP is all over the place on I-15 and coupled with Prius drivers on a 2 lane highway is. hahaha....
