Default Car Repair Price

Just wanted to make sure I got a reasonable deal. I have a 1999 Lexus GS300.

The mechanic down the street from my work charged me for the following:

(1) Resurface all 4 rotors.
(2) Install new OEM Lexus brake pads for the two rear wheels.
(3) Balance, rotate and install 2 brand new 245/35/19 Kumho Ecsta SPT tires for the front two wheels.

Total: $650 for all of the above, no tax since I'm paying in cash.

On tirerack, the same tires are $151 each plus around $35 shipping for both to my door.

Good deal?

So they are charging you $348 for resurfacing rotors, pads, and balance.. Its hard to say I would assume its an ok price, is this shop reputable?

For ours:

A brake job with all 4 rotors resurfaced, front pads, shims and labor was $260 from Dynamic Auto Services.

Tire mount and balance for an 18" was $15/each from City Tire. They didn't beat TR on tire prices but the cost was close enough and he had them within an hour of my call. That made the choice easy at the time.

Shop is reputable. The break down was actually $250 for new OEM Lexus brake pads for the rears and resurfacing all four rotors.

$200 for each tire installed. So $400 for the tires. Grand total was $650 for everything. No tax, paid in cash.

Thanks for the info. Seems like I'm paying a reasonable price.

he is only charging about $180-200 on labor for it all so it's decent pricing.

Default Update

Thanks for the feedback guys. Anyways, after I got my car, I experienced a bit of a grinding sound as the car was rolling and braking. The sound has gone away noticeably. But after, I'd say, 15 miles, there is still a slight grinding noise.

My rotors are old. I heard this was normal and that's what the mechanic said. The new pads are just adjusting to the resurfaced rotors. He said that this breaking in process is normal when you have resurfaced old rotors against new pads.

He said if the problem doesn't go away on its own in a day or so, he'd be glad to take a look at it for me. Is this normal?

Ive seen this on aftermarket pads before, as the shop said if it continues go back and see him

If the rotors were extremely low and he machined them to the minimum than what your experiencing could be normal (if it goes away) but if it doesn't make sure to check it!

Thanks for the feedback. And, yes, the rotors are old. I don't want to be a PITA customer, so I'm giving it a ride home and a ride back to work tomorrow. If the noise still exists by the time I get to work, it's going back to the shop. This is the great part about using a mechanic so close to your work.

I'll update tomorrow!

Can be normal depending on the pad as it begins to initially break that surface texture from the factory. Give it a bit and if it doesn't fade away with use, take it back and have it checked. A good long modest stop should get it settled quickly.

Thanks man. Yup, noise is gone. Figured it was just the breaking in period. GS runs like a charm again.
