Hundreds of people ride this route a week. There aren't enough specific road bike trails in Southern Cali as it is. We have to protect what we do have and stop these bandits on the trail.
True, but that particular route has a lot of sections where you're not within "public view" especially in the areas where the neighborhood isn't exactly posh.
And yeah - the shotgun part of the story is crazy.

to steal bikes is one thing but to pull out a shotgun and aim it at someone? thats major jail time.
Yea that's exactly why they are doing it. Gotta figure that each bike they are stealing is between $2k-6k. That's some serious money for a few bikes stolen a month.

Wow...incredible. I've only been on the SGRT twice but never on that particular stretch. Valley and SGRT is in El Monte, which isn't the best area. I'm glad the guys got away but boy is that scary.
