Default AC recharge for DIYer?

I have a 90 LS400, 220K, and A/C is warm. I see this Freeze12 refrigerant on Ebay but not in the stores. They claim its a drop in replacement for R12 and is approved by EPA. Ebay has kits for refill but I dont see it at any auto parts online stores. I also dont see any R134a retrofit kits at stores so I take it that this is not a DIYer job? Of course Im trying tokeep the cost down since the car is great but not worth a whole lot at this point.

Any experience with DIYer A/C?

R12 you need a license. I dont think you need one for R134a. Its sold in store to the public so I dont see how you'll need one. Walmart and other auto parts store sells retrofit kits for about $40. Not sure how those work though.

R12=not legal to sell in CA (which is why most of it comes in from tijuana)
R134=common+no issues.

R12 is legal for licensed professionals in 30lb containers only in California.

Retrofits are ok and is the norm nowadays but older systems do not have the compatible seals/rings/hoses for R134 and sometimes will leak. There are replacement retrofit o-rings available. Most shops/people just do a simple swap ,put in the retrofit oil and refill. Not the best way to go but it works with the latest stuff on the market that supposed to be more compatible and forgiving for older systems.

R12 was regulated for it's ozone depletion properties but it was found that R134 is many times worse for the environment vs R12 ever was and so California is now looking at banning R134 for consumer purchase much like R12.

Yeah yeah we all know I am reviving a 2+ year old thread.
Spare us all the smart comments.

Blue - I'd love a $40 refill.
Can you tell me where along Bolsa (Westminster, right?) to go?
I'm coming from LA, so I'm not that familiar with the area.

Usually that's the case. The AC system is suppose to be a sealed system.
