More on Dave the person and his beloved Lexus GS400.

David Tang’s ‘98 Lexus GS400
May 04, 2007
By Jerrette Kamaka

When drifting and the tuner scene hit Hawaii, there was a handful of guys who played a crucial role in its growing popularity. Some built tuner cars. Others sold after-market parts, and Dave Tang recorded it all and put it on DVD. Although Tang is well-known as one of the owners of GRIP Video, his first business venture was a café for car enthusiasts.

“In 1998 through 1999, a friend and I had opened a café in Salt Lake called the Hot Spot Café,” says the former UH volleyball player. “It was an alternative hangout to Zippy’s or McDonald’s,and was geared toward car enthusiasts.

We had Gran Turismo gaming tournaments, organized car cruises and we stayed open until 2 a.m.”

Working in the restaurant business until 2 in the morning proved to be harder than expected, so Tang closed the café, went back to school and got his master’s in information systems. Around the same time, he and two friends launched GRIP Video, which helped shape the tuner industry in Hawaii. But there were times when Tang thought of ending his adoration of cars.

“It’s all about loving cars,” says Tang. “I’ve tried to get out of cars, because being business-oriented it’s hard to spend money on something that depreciates instead of investing money on something that appreciates, like real estate. But because I’m in the business and I love working on cars and modifying them to my own taste and different from everyone else. I keep coming back to cars.”

Although Tang has been a longtime builder of VIP yakuza-style cars like this ‘98 Lexus
GS400, he’s building a 240SX which will hit the streets soon.

For those who didn't know Dave....here's a article about him after his passing...he was a super guy...a pioneer in Hawaii's VIP scene...and a great friend to all.

In Memory of David Wing Kerng Tang

March 07, 2008
By Jerrette Kamaka

David Tang February 28, 1976-February 22, 2008

The world lost one of Hawaii’s most prolific car enthusiasts and pioneers in motorsports media. Dave Tang lost his 19-month battle with cancer Feb. 22, 2008 six days shy of his 32nd birthday.

“When Dave was born it was a proud time for the family,” says Ron Tang, Dave’s father, “because he was a son and the first child of the family I was starting. So at the time, we knew the Tang name was going to continue on with Dave.”

Ron Tang, a car buff himself, passed on the knowledge of cars to his son at an early age. A game that father and son played was “name the car.” As cars passed by, Ron would ask his son, “What kind of car was that, Dave?” This admiration for cars led Dave and two other friends to start one of the import world’s renowned video production companies, Grip Video.

“The only plan I had for Dave was to play volleyball because I enjoyed it,” says Ron Tang. “So around seventh grade he started playing volleyball and around ninth and 10th grade he shot up four inches. I didn’t think he would reach 6 feet 6 inches, but that’s what he grew to.”

After graduating from Mid-Pac, Dave was invited by coach Wilton to walk on and join the UH volleyball team, and was a member of the 1996 team that finished the season at 27-3.

Everyone who knew Dave will remember him for his infinite compassion, unremitting thoughtfulness and unconditional love he shared with everyone. If the world had more Dave Tangs, it would surely be a better place.

Dave is survived by his father, stepmother Linda Tang, mother Lily, stepfather Dwight Miyashiro and sister Tiffany. Services for Dave Tang will be held at Diamond Head Mortuary March 11 with a viewing 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., services 11:30 a.m. to noon, burial at noon followed by lunch. Casual attire.

Do I have to be there? Supposed to have a softball game that day, so I wasn't planning on doing this cruise. But we'll see what time my game is. If I can't make it, you guy are welcome to meetup there though.

If anyone needs coffee or food, there's always Zippys.
