Twin turbo V8's.....
With turbo V6's becoming mainstream (the LS500, the 2017 Ford Raptor and the entire Ecoboost movement) is it safe to assume that it is only a matter of time when turbo V8's start hitting the mainstream market?
The vaunted Ford GT runs on the Ecoboost platform, replacing the much-loved V8. The MB GL450 replaced the base V8 with a twin turbo V6. There was a brief outcry when the Mustang came with the Ecoboost option, as well as the F150. I know some CL members weren't happy with a not-available V8 in the LS500. I'm just thinking, with the advances in hp/torque in the V6, wouldn't the turbo V8's be the next evolution to our hunger for power, statistics and bragging rights?
I can also see companies like Tesla achieving significant R&D milestones to extract already-awesome power from batteries and further lowering the cost of electric vehicles as the other key powertrain trend. Maybe I'm salivating on a LX570 with a twin turbo V8 to replace the current 5.7L....hah

I think the pressure on manufacturers for efficient power aka good mpg requirements with manufacturers also wanting to offer decent power has led to the growth of the TTV6's which offers both. I could see TT V8's being possible but smaller displacement TT V8's.
Landcruisers overseas already have 4.5L Twin Turbo V8 Turbo Diesel options. Wish that was an option here. The Ford GT should have kept the V8 imo.

Man I would love to see a V8 TT offered in the new LS.
They could have easily offered a 4.0 liter V8 at 475 HP (same 118-119 HP/liter of the V6 TT). While it's similar to the 5 liter NA, HP wise, it would undoubtedly offer better fuel economy, if you care about those things.
To me V8 TT @ 475 HP just sounds way better and would immediately beat all the competition in those numbers. Just sounds better, too.

I see Toyota no longer selling V8's in the future IMO. Top of the line will be a twin turbo V6, expect to see a version of the TT V6 found in the new Lexus LS to make its way into the truck lines to replace the existing 5.7 liter V8. If Toyota was to continue with V8's, they would've put a new one in the new LS. This is their flagship, which shows the way forward for the company IMO, not having the new V8 ready and its coming out soon is a line of crap IMO.

never said it's rare. sheer number of s550 alone would make it not rare at all. just saying that the way i look at mainstream is a bit more economical, for example maybe 10 years ago or so when v6 started overtaking the v4 as its price came down drastically and also efficiency went up a lot
