Thought and research can sometimes be wrong. Look at the number of negative comments on the ad, just in this thread alone. But, of course, we'll see.

Yup something like this, or any ad campaign, comes with risks. That's where having talented, knowledgeable people on the brand and at the ad agency comes in. Time will tell.

You have to remember this is a Lexus enthusiast forum, the needs and expectations of members on CL aren't anywhere close to the audience that the Super Bowl is going to reach.

The notion that, "well because people on X forum says so, must be true" is very iffy at best.

On CL, if it doesn't have 300 champagne glasses on the hood, its not a good Lexus commercial.

I believe that's the same Blimp hangar in San Diego that Chevy used for their latest ads..

Can't say the Lexus commercial is all that great. Very much a bunch of cliche's and metaphors edited together and really trying too hard to tell you that driver and machine are one. The Benz commercials are much more creative in the story telling mode. But...

Sure the hip hop/rap guy is dancing it up and flipping around with the LC500 laying down some tracks around him. Looks like some East Village experimental dance/ballet theater group thing.

And yeah with the Mercedes commercial, Peter Fonda shows up at the end of the commercial as the guy who dared to block a bunch of wild-eyed rowdy tattoo sporting bikers and roars off into the dust. But you would have to know who Peter Fonda is, wouldn't you? Otherwise all you see is a bunch of bikers and some old guy leaving them aghast. That dates you as an audience right away.

If you know who Peter Fonda is then you'll recognize him on sight and make the "biker" association with Easy Rider and Born to be Wild. btw Easy Rider rarely shows up on cable channels so its sort of more of a legend than it is actually popular.

OTH Lexus is projecting club dance and hip hop beats and young edgy and rich. I think that the commercial is aimed at the young Silicon Valley and newly minted entertainment crowd. The point is that there are car buyers who are young enough now to not know a lot of Hollywood icons from the past and are more likely to associate more with club culture or dance music or street car culture.

True to some extent, but, just given the sheer numbers, it's difficult to find forums that are larger than this one.....or that have so many different members all chiming in at once.

On CL, if it doesn't have 300 champagne glasses on the hood, its not a good Lexus commercial.
I liked those old James Sloyan "Mr. Lexus" ads too (his smooth voice was worth a million bucks). That's what Lexus represented in those days. But that was the company then......what they are doing today (not always wise, IMO) and the way they are designing today's vehicles is quite another matter.

Actually, the majority opinion on today's CL (and, being older and more conservative, I'm probably in the minority here) would not support those kind of old refinement-centered ads that Sloyan did. They seem to like today's Lexus, with the spindle grilles, more firm and responsive tires/suspension/underpinnings, lightweight materials, and advanced electronics.

A little too stereotypical for my tastes, but, yeah, well-filmed.......I've seen lots worse. Didn't know Fonda was still around.
