I truly expected better from Lexus. Has this been a long standing issue with Lexus?
Can't really say. I've had fantastic success with the voice recognition in my cars. I use it all the time.

wow, completely wrong. my 2000 GS400 had parts of climate and radio controls ONLY through the touchscreen. so that car's 16 years old and the same system had been around for 2 years already on the LS and GS.

but apart from a car like a lincoln or tesla that tries to use a screen for most everything, vehicles with touch screens still have (sometimes redundant) buttons/*****/rockers as well. plus as has been pointed out before, these days loads of controls are on the steering wheel. my car allows control of audio, cruise, and climate without taking my hands off the wheel.

Yeah the Jeep wasn't terrible. I was in a friends X5 today and we were laughing about how terrible it was.

Default Apple CarPlay is here

I'm installing Apple CarPlay into my Porsche, which in 2007 they couldn't be bothered to put in a decent system in a 60k car!

At least with IOS you know Apple will continue to update CarPlay and they make a great UI.

As for transmissions, only 6 speed manual for me, and I shift into every gear every time sequentially, I find it odd someone would ever skip gears.

Actually the touch screen interface was an option on the 1992 Toyota Soarer, it was pretty similar to those that came in the Lexus LS and GS a few years later, in that audio and climate control functions were all intergrated into the screen along with satellite navigation. I think it was one of the first cars to come factory equipped with such tech.

That is one or two models that put some audio and hvac controls as touchscreen when you optioned NAV, without NAV all controls were manual but yes there have been some experimentation with touchscreen in the past but not mostly full control and widespread adoption until pretty recently.

Sometimes the salespersons can get it to work...but, yes, in general, I haven't been impressed with it, either.

on my jeep, i use commands like these often with success:

'play artist coldplay'
'call <name> mobile'

using voice for nav though is an exercise in frustration usually. i use the car nav with memorized locations, and i use Google by voice on my phone for new locations.

In my Lexus I basically just use Siri Eyes Free and bypass the car's voice recognition entirely. It works much better for making calls, sending texts, etc.
