Default Diesel-powered Ford F-150 caught undisguised

Ford is preparing a refresh for the F-150 in 2018, and topping the list of new features will be an optional diesel engine. While we've seen a diesel F-150 testing before now, our spy photographer has caught a completely undisguised test vehicle with both the hood and fuel door open.

The engine bay appears to be a tangle of hoses and wires, while the fuel door obviously shows a green diesel inlet. Inside, a placard on the dashboard reads "Diesel Fuel Only!". It also says that the truck will have auto stop/start, though it doesn't appear the system is functioning in this truck. The truck also appears to have a unique exhaust tip.

The rumor is that the new 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine comes courtesy of Jaguar Land Rover. The photos here reveal a diesel-powered Land Rover Range Rover Sport following the diesel Ford, further cementing the validity of this rumor. In the Range Rover, this engine makes 254 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. That's slightly more than the 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque made by the Ram EcoDiesel.

Somewhat odd, considering that Ford sold off both companies a number of years ago.

Wonder what sort of ridiculous price they'll charge for the diesel option. That's always been the main problem with diesel options in pickups, they're so damn expensive . . .

1. F250, Powerstroke Diesel is an $8500 option
2. Ram 1500, Eco Diesel(a Fiat engine BTW, not sure how I feel about that) is a $4270 option, only available on quad or crew cab models, thus its $35k MSRP in work truck quad cab spec
3. Ram 2500, the Cummins diesel is a $9000 option, basic reg cab work truck with diesel is $38k MSRP
4. Chevrolet Colorado, the 2.8 liter Duramax diesel is a $4965 option, only available on crew cab, LT models or higher spec. It also requires you select several other packages which brings the option total to $6600. Cheapest Colorado diesel you can get is $35k, although it is well equipped.
5. Titan XD, the Cummins diesel is a $5,000 option, cheapest low spec version is $40k, but fairly well equipped with power windows, a/c, cloth seats, spray out rubber floors, etc
5. Chevrolet 2500 Silverado- Duramax diesel option is $8595 option, cheapest 2500 diesel work truck is $42k MSRP.

Granted if you need to tow a heavy load or are going to be carrying a very heavy payload(mainly I think of chassis cab models with custom beds for heavy payload), the diesel engine is the way to go in the bigger trucks, it is the better option vs the big gas engine. It doesn't strain/rev nearly as much, keeps its speed on grades, and gives you much better fuel economy loaded and unloaded.

For a 1/2 ton or smaller truck, the diesel just does not make sense. It costs too much for the marginal fuel economy benefits. Plus half ton gas engines have gotten a lot more fuel efficient without sacrificing power in the last 10-15 years.

About the only manufacturer who could make a diesel engine a cost effective fuel economy option was Volkswagen. IE VW was the only manufacturer who could hold the price on the diesel engine option to make it a viable fuel economy option(ie the price of the diesel option was pretty small, in that the savings in fuel would actually pay for the diesel engine option up charge within 10-20k miles worth of driving). The only way they were able to do this was to completely bypass(aka cheat) all government air quality regulations.
