Chevrolet Retail Share Up in August and 7 Out of 8 Months This Year

2016-09-01
  • Record ATPs reflect retail strength and strong mix
  • Disciplined incentive spending significantly below industry average
  • Inventories low but growing on all-new Buick Envision, GMC Acadia and Cadillac XT5
  • Cadillac gains retail share
DETROIT – Despite very tight dealer inventories, General Motors (NYSE: GM) sold 212,915 vehicles to individual or “retail” customers in August, down about 5 percent from last year, but in line with the industry’s retail performance for the month.

Based on initial estimates, Chevrolet’s retail market share rose 0.4 percentage points in August to 11.0 percent. Chevrolet has gained retail market share in seven out of eight months this year, and remains the industry’s fastest growing full-line brand.

GM’s total sales in August were down about 5 percent year over year to 256,429 vehicles.

Year to date, GM’s performance is reflecting a very strong retail business.
  • Retail share up 0.5 percentage points
  • ATPs up more than $2,500
  • Disciplined incentive spending, in line with 2015
  • Daily rental deliveries down 34 percent
  • Disciplined inventory levels and growing availability of key launch products
Through the 1st 8 months of the year, GM retail sales are up 1 percent, which continues to be the largest retail share gain of any full-line automaker. Year to date, Chevrolet retail sales are up more than 2 percent and the brand’s retail share has grown 0.5 percentage points. Year to date, Buick retail deliveries have grown 3 percent and Buick has gained 0.1 percentage points of retail share.

“Despite tighter dealer inventories, we had a solid retail performance in August led by Chevrolet, which gained retail share in eight different segments,” said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president of Sales Operations. “Our retail strength is reflected in our record ATPs in August, which were up more than $1,600 from last month and nearly $5,800 above the industry average while our incentive spending was below the industry average and well below our domestic competitors.”

In addition, GM continues to take advantage of a strong, stable U.S. economy and industry.

“All the economic factors continue to point toward a strong second half of the year and another potential record year for the industry,” said Mustafa Mohatarem, GM’s chief economist. “We think the industry is well positioned for a sustainable high level of customer demand.”

Trucks and Compacts Star as American Honda Reports August Sales

Sep 1, 2016 - TORRANCE, Calif.
  • American Honda and Honda Division trucks have best August sales ever
  • Honda CR-V sets 2nd consecutive all-time sales record
  • Honda core models—Civic, Accord and CR-V—each top more than 30,000 sales
  • Honda's smallest vehicles—Fit and HR-V—post largest gains for the brand
  • Refreshed Acura MDX posts 8.1 percent gain to push Acura trucks up 2.5 percent in August
American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported strong August sales of 149,571 Honda and Acura vehicles, a 3.8 percent decrease over August 2015 due in part to the lack of the Labor Day sales weekend. American Honda trucks set a new August record, rising 4.3 percent on sales of 76,140. Honda Division sales totaled 135,325 units, with Honda trucks also setting an August record, gaining 4.5 percent on sales of 66,802. Acura Division sales were down 7 percent on sales of 14,246 units, also feeling the effects of the lost weekend. However, Acura trucks were up 2.5 percent on sales of 9,338 as new models continued to fill the pipeline.

Honda
Honda Division's August sales almost matched the same period last year without one of the biggest holiday sales weekends of the year. Despite the handicap, CR-V continued its record-setting ways for the 2nd straight month while all 3 of the brand's best-selling models (Accord, Civic and CR-V) topped 30,000 units apiece and Honda's compact HR-V and Fit posted major gains. Honda trucks posted a new August record supported by brisk sales of CR-V, HR-V and Ridgeline, while Civic and Fit drove car sales for the brand.
  • Honda trucks set a new August record, rising 4.5 percent with sales of 66,802 units
  • CR-V climbed 5 percent on sales of 36,517 for a 2nd consecutive all-time record
  • HR-V sales jumped 66 percent on sales of 7,580 vehicles
  • Civic and Fit were up 2.4 percent (32,807 sales) and 85.1 percent (5,370 sales)
"Our continued success with strong sales of both passenger cars and light trucks demonstrates once again that the key to great sales is great product," said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division. "As we continue with our rapid cadence of new models, our focus will remain on selling vehicles one at a time to individual customers."

Acura
With inventories building for the new 2017 MDX, sales continue to rise as more customers experience the bold new exterior styling and expanded complement of premium features and technologies. Adding a solid result from RDX, Acura truck sales were up 2.5 percent in August, with sedan sales held back in part due to the lost holiday weekend compared to August 2015.
  • MDX sales increased 8.1 percent in August on sales of 5,131 units
  • Acura trucks were up 2.5 percent overall for the month, with 9,338 vehicles sold
  • The new NSX posted 22 sales in August as production continues to ramp up in Acura's new NSX global production facility
"It's great to see Acura's Precision Crafted Performance DNA resonate with customers, as the new MDX gives luxury buyers their 1st taste of our new performance design direction," said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of the Acura division. "Together with the launch of the amazing new NSX, a resurgent Acura Motorsports program and growing intentions from younger buyers, we continue to build strong momentum for the Acura brand."# # #

  • Lexus LUVs post best-ever August and year-to-date sales
  • NX up 21.6 percent in August with sales of 5,407 units; best month ever
  • GX up more than 12 percent for the month
  • LX up 95.6 percent in August
  • Lexus L/Certified posts best-ever August
Lexus utes and Lexus CPO are doing awesome.

NX is making some serious inroads. Polarizing styling is definitely not a deterrent. A revised suspension (rides a bit rough, could be cushier) and some cabin noise reduction would do wonders on for the baby Lexus ute.

  • Second-best sales month in Audi of America history
  • Q3 sets third consecutive sales record with 88 percent increase
  • Strong demand for A4 sedan in tightening car market
Audi’s August sales increased 2.5 percent to 19,264 vehicles, the brand’s 68th straight monthly sales record in the U.S.

Audi achieved its best-ever August, as well as the second-best sales month, in the brand’s U.S. history. The previous August record was set in 2015 with sales of 18,794 vehicles. Year-to-date sales have risen 3.5 percent to 134,562 vehicles sold. August 2016 sales are second only to December 2015.

Demand for Audi SUVs bolstered August sales with a 9.1 percent increase over last August and a 20 percent increase year-to-date. The Q3 posted its 3rd consecutive sales record with 2,238 vehicles sold for the month, an 88 percent increase over August 2015. Sales of the Q7 rose 16 percent from last August to 2,347 vehicles, with an increase of 56 percent year-to-date.

Amid lagging consumer demand for cars, the A4 sedan posted a 17 percent increase to 2,965 vehicles for the month and a 12 percent increase year-to-date. The A3 model line posted 3,032 sales for August, including 346 deliveries of the A3 Sportback e-tron. The plug-in hybrid has recorded sales of 2,637 vehicles year-to-date.

“August marks the end of a successful summer selling season with key models such as the Q3 drawing more customers to the brand,” said Mark Del Rosso, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Audi of America. “We are certain that our momentum will result in sustained growth this year.”
