Its like all Mercedes models, unless they get the right packages and upgrades, they actually are pretty homely...I also have found that while I like Lexus, BMW and Audi models better in person than in pictures, in general I like Mercedes models in pictures better than in person. The exception is the S Class.

This wasn't destined to be a taxi lol, and this wasn't in Europe. The car was $60,000...same as what my Luxury GS350 was, and that car was a much nicer car inside and out than the E Class I saw.

If that car was $50,000 that would be one thing...
I have used e400 in my mb dealer parking lot. What are you talking about - No e400 in the US?

The next generation model is out. There's no E400 planned to arrive as of yet- models that have been confirmed for the U.S. are the E300, E43, and E63. Here's a pic of the newest generation with its C and S brothers:

I echo what Tango said, the material and build quality in the W212 was very good, style and ergonomics however were another story.

I would say material quality in the W213 I sat in was a step down from the W212, but the styling and ergonomics were better.

The new generation just came out, the only car currently available is the E300 4cyl. Thats another issue, to spend this much money for a car with a 4cyl and no 6cyl power...

The E400 is coming, but not until next year probably.

I wouldn't be so sure about that just yet. MBUSA is being really sketchy on this one. The E400 hasn't shown up on any internal US documents that I've seen from my usual source. Seems to be slated to follow the pattern set by the C-class (C300, C43, C63) as it stands.

Would be nice if they squeezed an E400 in there though.

There is a C450. They're not going to offer a mainstream V6 in the C and not the E.

C450 is changing into the C43. And even then, the C450 was an AMG Sport model with some items cribbed from the C63.

Going to be at that same price point though.

Bottom line IMHO is they need a easily accessible V6 option. Otherwise they become the only midsize entry without that. I'm not buying a 4cyl E class, non enthusiasts will, or people will "because its a Mercedes", but I want V6 power in a midlevel luxury car and V8 power in a full-sized luxury car. I drove a 740 and and S550 yesterday, and the feel of the engine in the 740 just isn't right.

Sure, but we weren't debating that. Point blank there's no E400 scheduled for the U.S. at this time.

As I've said multiple times, we'll be getting an sporty AMG E43 (V6 TT) but no luxury-focused V6 equivalent. There is an E400 planned for other markets...perhaps MBUSA is just waiting for the I6 engines to drop in 2017.

I distinctly remember 5 to 6 e400 sitting in the outside parking lot of my MB dealer when I went for an oil change. Can you be a bit more clear about your claim?

I don't know how I can possibly be more clear. The middle car in the pictures I posted above, the new generation E-class, is not available in E400 form. There are currently no plans to bring the E400 to the U.S.

What you saw at your dealer was the now previous generation W212 E-class, which was available in E400 form.

There is no 2017 E400 available. Bottom line. What you saw must have been the previous generation like Tango said.

The MBUSA website:

E300....thats all there be.

Which is a huge mistake, who wants a little 4 cyl in a expensive C or E class type car?

I don't have an issue with it in the C or E as a base engine. But they need V6 power available.

I mean...the E is a big car for 242 hp to shove around.

For the record, I think the W221 S-class aged extremely well and was still very competitive right up until the end.
I personally didn't care for some of the interior materials of that car (like all the plastic buttons on the IP) but sure I suppose it was average for its class. As far as build quality went, I found the doors of every W212 I had been in didn't have the solidity of its competition. For example if you thumped your fist against them they moved and rattled a lot more than those in the 5er or A6. I suppose that is very nitpicky but I am always obsessed w/ details.

I agree the W221 was decent until the end but I wouldn't say it was head's and shoulders above the competition. Now the W220...that was a disaster.
