I believe BMW does this.

I don't recommend Balboni-style reversing with the door open but at least Lexus lets you do it, although the warning screech should alert the driver that something's not right.
Why not just automatically apply the brakes? Abuse of the transmission's parking-prowl like that will lead to either the prowl snapping in two or the transmission to begin shedding parts.

If so, that is extremely poor engineering....at least the way it is described above. I don't believe any credible transmission engineer would sign off on that.

I've never had the need to open my door while my vehicle is moving forward. Why would one need to do that?

Agreed. In all normal driving, that would never (or almost never) be an issue.

Then I don't see what the problem is.

You said you thought it was a poor engineering decision and you couldn't imagine an engineer signing off on it.

Id be interested to test it. My neighbor just got a 15 Summit that has the fix but I'm not tempted to try and slam it in park at speed haha.

He's had a bunch of JGCs, now he has two!

I do not know for sure if it does this like I had mentioned, that is why I said I believe it does. On the Autoblog podcast this week they were addressing the Jeep issue and they simply mentioned BMW's method in case the car is left in drive and the door opens.

Updated: my sister has a BMW, she just informed me that if she were to take her foot of the gas the car auto holds the vehicles on a hill, down hill, standing at a light etc etc. So if one forget to put the car in park and they take their foot off the brake, the car does not go anywhere.

That specifically is only if it has the Auto Hold function, and if that function is activated.

As I noted earlier, many vehicles with electric shift mechanisms will place the vehicle into park if the door is opened.

There are various "car wash" modes that need to be enabled to allow an attendant to leave a car in neutral and then exit the vehicle after they place it on the tracks.

I would think that this is very seldom done now, what with the proliferation of wide-angle reverse cameras and even bird's-eye-view cameras.

I can't imagine the sense of having ANY transmission parking/locking device that locks the transmission rigidly (like the PARK function does) engage while the vehicle is in motion. It is just asking for broken or shed parts.
