Apr 1, 2016 - TORRANCE, Calif.
Trucks and sedans push American Honda to robust March sales of 138,221 units, a gain of 9.4 percent for the month
American Honda trucks set new sales record, climbing 5.7 percent on sales of 64,453
New Honda Civic sets new March sales record, jumping 21.8 percent while Accord gains 17.3 percent
RDX leads Acura trucks, setting new March record with 34 percent gain
Acura TLX performance sedan climbs 9.9 percent in March
American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported March sales of 138,221 Honda and Acura vehicles, an increase of 9.4 percent for the month. AHM trucks set a new March benchmark, gaining 5.7 percent on sales of 64,453 units. Honda Division sales were up 10.5 percent with 123,369 units sold in March; Honda car sales reached 68,314, up 13.7 percent, while truck sales totaled 55,055, a 6.9 percent gain for the month. Acura sales totaled 14,852 in March, gaining 1.2 percent. Acura sedans were up 4.8 percent on sales of 5,454 while Acura trucks reached 9,398 sales for the month.

Honda
Continuing to buck U.S. sales trends with its core sedans—Civic and Accord—Honda sales easily moved past the previous March total with a record setting performance from Civic, backed by strong performances from Accord and HR-V. Core truck models CR-V, Pilot and Odyssey, maintained strong demand.
With sales records set in each of the past three months, the Civic Sedan is dominating the compact car segment with essentially one body style as production of the newly on-sale Civic Coupe ramps up. Civic sales jumped 21.8 percent to a new March record of 32,855.
Accord continued to demonstrate incredible market strength with an increase of 17.3 percent in March, with 30,523 units sold—focused on sales to individual customers.
With production at the Celaya plant in Mexico focused primarily on HR-V, sales of the Honda gateway truck model topped 6,300 units in March.
"The power of Honda's well-balanced portfolio was on full display in March," said Jeff Conrad, senior vice president and general manager of the Honda Division. "Importantly, we will continue to strengthen both our car and truck lineups throughout the year, with new core and niche products to further extend the brand's appeal."

Acura
Acura enjoyed a balanced sales month, with the refreshed RDX SUV posting a remarkable 34 percent gain so set a new March record to lead the brand's sales gains, while Acura performance sedans maintained strong sales despite a luxury sedan market where competitors are relying heavily upon fleet sales and incentives.
RDX showed renewed sales strength in March, leading Acura truck sales with a 34 percent gain on sales of 5,310 units.
TLX continued to hold a strong sales position near the top of the mid-luxury sedan segment with 3,768 units sold in March, rising 9.9 percent despite aggressive competitor sales tactics.
"Acura posted a solid month even as we gained fresh momentum from the New York Auto Show debuts of the 2017 MDX and NSX GT3 racecar," said Jon Ikeda, vice president and general manager of the Acura division. "Our entire Acura team is excited by the market reaction to our new design direction and the preparation for delivery of the 1st all-new NSX."

With March sales of 58,279 units – including best-ever single month sales for the Forte line of compact cars – Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced a new first quarter record of 146,321 vehicles. The historic January-March performance saw the Forte, Sportage and Sedona nameplates post double digit gains over the same period last year.

“After outpacing the industry last year and setting a new all-time annual sales record, Kia has carried its momentum into 2016,” said Michael Sprague, chief operating officer and EVP, KMA. “Sell down of the outgoing Sportage exceeded our expectations, and the arrival of the completely redesigned model is the latest reason for customers to discover the ‘New Kia’ as we continue challenging everything people think they know about this brand.”

(April 1, 2016) Volkswagen of America, Inc. (VWoA) today reported sales of 26,914 units delivered in March 2016. The Tiguan produced the best March results on record for the vehicle with 3,519 vehicles delivered, a 53 percent increase over March 2015.

“We are pleased with the continued strong performance of the Tiguan,” said Mark McNabb, chief operating officer, Volkswagen of America. “While overall sales saw a decline for the month, Volkswagen dealers improved in terms of retail business.”

In March, Volkswagen debuted the next member of the Golf family with the U.S. production version of the all-wheel-drive Golf Alltrack. The Golf Alltrack, which goes on sale in the Fall as a 2017 model, is based on the Golf SportWagen and includes 4MOTION® all-wheel drive, body cladding, additional ground clearance, and “Off-Road Mode” which adds hill descent control and optimizes traction control. Deliveries of the Golf family totaled 4,495 vehicles in March.

Arrow Hybrids

March is sometimes called the “spring selling season” and sure enough, sales were up from a year ago and certainly up from the 1st 2 months of this year.

Sales in each of the vehicle categories were also up over January and February, although year-to-date sales were up (as compared to last year) for only plug-ins hybrids and battery electric vehicles.

Sales for full electric vehicles were up from last year on the strength of the Model S and Model X, the latter of which finally enjoyed a breakout month as production increased. The Model S also had a good month, which continues the pattern of the final month of the quarter resulting in high sales. The Leaf had another poor month, which suggests that this trend will continue until the version with greater range (107 miles) is fully available. As noted last month, the availability of the BMW i3 apparently remains an issue, as sales have been very low after a strong December when a push was made to meet annual sales goals.

Plug-in hybrids had a good month as compared to last month and year-ago, as the growth rates for the category were much greater than the overall market. The category leaders, namely the Volt, Fusion, and C-Max all did very well. Strong results vs. last year were augmented by the new entrants from Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Mercedes, and Volvo. The Volt is now available nationally, but should continue to increase as inventories increase in line with production. Of course, the lack of availability of the Prius Plug-in for most of this year will offset the increases that will occur from other products.

Hybrids had another poor month, although sales of the new Prius are starting to increase (albeit still less than last year). Sales of the RAV4 continue to improve, and the Prius c and Prius v (based on the old Prius) continue to be available although sales are down from a year ago. The Hyundai Sonata hybrid and Lexus RX performed better than most of the other hybrids with sales above year-ago levels. Toyota’s products represent almost three-quarters of the segment this month, which is higher than the norm.

Of course, the diesel segment continues to struggle as VW has still (!) not reached an agreement with the EPA and the California Air Resources Board on a fix for its products. A judge allowed for a 1 month extension for a settlement, so it may occur this month. Even with the settlement, it will take many months for these vehicles to be back on sale with consumer reception still unclear.

Fiat-Chrysler’s diesel products, namely the Ram Pickup, ProMaster, and Grand Cherokee, represent 2/3 of the segment, which of course is far different than the norm, since VW is out of the market. The Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon diesels are now in the market and their volumes continue to increase. The current version of the Cruze diesel is now out of production (limited inventories continue to be sold) and the replacement product is still some months away.

I wonder how much the ban on below invoice advertising has an affect on the #s? Toyco has been drastically discounting their sedans, while leaving their SUVs untouched price wise basically This could be the initial dip because of this, but I'm sure it'll return to normal levels, especially when the whole lineup gets turned over with the TNGA platform.

2 LFAs sold! Just how many more of those things they do have still sitting around? It's got to be massively discounted for it to move at this point.

Nah, the price is still high. I think it will only rise up from now on.

LFA's are sold at premium, not discounted.

it is sedan sales that are simply dropping in favor of SUVs, as simple as that... so you either have to have something brand new that you can turn your old customers to, or discount like crazy.

Problem that Toyota has right now specifically is that they cant produce enough of their SUVs... they are changing that but manufacturing changes are slow... Rav4 NA production capacity is doubling by 2019, Highlander factory will get an upgrade when facelift starts production and Tacoma will be soon as well.

Next "big" thing for them will be C-HR early next year.

Lexus will also need small and large SUV if they want to offset their car sales dropping.

But same goes for every other manufacturer as well.

When it comes to luxury manufacturers, I would not shed a tear for top 3, they all sold record levels last year.
