More EPA vs imported 25 year old vehicle news
Fun news for those keeping up with the rules governing vehicle importation in the USA.
Here we have the case of an American serviceman having imported a Defender well over 25 years old but at one time during the vehicle's long life the original diesel engine blew and had to be replaced. This was done with a slightly newer turbo-diesel engine that actually puts out fewer emissions than the old one.
And that engine alone is just as of this year 25 years old. Note that the EPA officially exempts imported engines that are *21 years old* or older.
Here, the EPA objects to customs releasing the truck because they say once a vehicle is modified from its "original configuration" it is no longer considered exempt and clear for importation.
I'll leave this here for everyone to draw their own theories an conclusions. Remember, don't just apply this to the one case. Think in terms of "legal precedent".

The EPA much like the IRS is unchecked and out of control. Both have their place but this making of laws without it going through the appropriate process and then creatively interpreting said laws needs to stop.
