It's more of a S coupe competitor, but S coupe is hard to beat...

It has a cult like status now? Since when? You never hear anything about those cars. Never seen one modified or heard of anyone collecting them?

It's definitely a beautiful car but I'd never buy an old BMW unless it was some E30 or something cheap for tracking.

Absolutely one of the most beautiful cars of its era and today it still looks great. Ironically, it's the Lexus SC's that are the keepers because they still run great and won't present you with the ongoing maintenance and upkeep issues of that era's 8 series.

Never seen one of these 8's in years, but in the summer I see at least two or three SC's from those years.

There's a used car lot in my city that, I kid you not, has had a jet black 8-series on the lot since I was still in high school. Almost ten years later.... the car is still sitting on the lot. It's in good shape, I remember seeing it up close when we were teenagers because it was a cool car to look at. Not sure if the owner of the place decided about keeping it, but whatever the case may be, it's still on the lot every time I drive by that place. I cannot make any sense of it.

This car was GORGEOUS. There is no certainly argument there. But it was extremely over- engineered and had a weightiness and heft to its steering and feel that were very unappealing. The 840ci strained what was really a masterful V8 engine that did well in the 540i and 740i/il of the time. The 850i's V-12 was simply 'adequate' in this car too. These cars also ate Getrag 6-speeds for breakfast!!!! The 850csi was BMW coming in too late to the tuner game. Dual batteries in the back to help with weight distribution was simply silly.

Crack that beautiful nose and you were paying the amount for a cheap used car to get THAT car fixed. Worked at a dealership that got a lot of those in. Tried so hard to love it but couldn't.

Mercedes new big coupe, especially in AMG dress is doing it as well as anyone can or will for the next few years in the flagship coupe arena. The I8 isn't a new 8-series, just and expensive exercise in battery tech.

BMW needs to be careful too. The 635ci/CSI/M6 of the time were a couple of generations apart. That won't be the case this time. So they stand to be in direct comp with each other.

Interesting exercise nonetheless.

I love this video of a 850csi with manual gearbox accelerating and driving on a empty Autobahn. Not only the performance is great, the stability at high speed is impressive. This car has greater performance than many cars of today

^ That car has some serious legs. I'd imagine if you put a shorter rear gear in it or some closer spaced gear ratios in the transmission it would be a real rocket ship, even if it only topped out at 130-140.

Most American cars with the 6 speed manual(Viper, Camaro, Trans Am, Corvette, etc) 6th is such a tall overdrive gear you actually reach top speed in 5th, shifting to 6th doesn't give you enough power to overcome the air resistance at 150+mph.

I seriously doubt Lexus is going to spend more $$$$ to design another slow selling coupe. This isn't the 1950's/60's/70's/80's where coupes were half of the market.

Now a proper 2 seat sports car with hardtop and convertible versions, and a larger 4 seat "grand touring" convertible, those are ideas I could get behind.

Right now I think "expensive coupe" and "entry level coupe" with the LC and RC has the market covered. I just do not see a slot between the two, unless it is some extremely focused, 2 seat Corvette fighter that is a hardcore sports car. And I'd rather much see that as a turbocharged rocket ship called the Toyota Supra. Cost be damned, I think Toyota could sell a light weight, minimalist 2 seater or 2+2 that weighed about 3200lbs and had a turbocharged 500+hp engine under the hood for about 80-100k.

Default SPY PICS: 8 Series revived

BMW is set to revive the 8 Series moniker with its new flagship coupe, and spy pics reveal it will be vast.

Based on the 7 Series platform, the 8 Series will be aimed squarely at taking on stiff competition from Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class Coupe and Bentley’s Continental GT. As the 8 Series will be so closely linked to its four door brother, expect the running gear to be very similar.

The 8 Series Coupe will replace the 6 Series when production begins late next year 2018.

IMO, they could just reskin the new Supra for a SC replacement.

Default BMW Trademarks 8-Series Monikers, Including M8

BMW’s move to trademark a number of 8-Series related names with the global intellectual property regulators is reigniting rumors of a comeback for the Grand Tourer built from 1989 through 1999.

According to BMW’s application that was discovered by Autoexpress, the Bavarians registered the 825, 830, 835, 850, 845, 860, M8 and M850 names. The magazine reports that a BMW insider told them that the “move was not merely a case of the company ring-fencing the badges for possible future use, and that it reflects an imminent rejig of BMW’s GT line-up”.

By that, the report points to another recent rumor about the next 6-Series shifting into a true performance model with more compact dimensions to rival the Porsche 911 and Mercedes-AMG GT, thus making room for a new Grand Tourer higher up in the range to go after the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe and perhaps even Bentley’s Continental GT.

Unlike the original M8 prototype developed in the early '90s, which used a V12 engine, BMW's rival for the Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe is believed to use a twin-turbo V8 shared with the next M5, while the V12 mill found in the latest 7-Series could make its way under the hood of the 850/M850 or possibly the 860i/M860i.

Officially, BMW hasn’t confirmed any of this, so of course, it should be taken with a grain of salt until we have more concrete proof.
