I don't commute and I'm very **** so I fill up when my car reaches 1/2 a tank. I think I'm just conditioned to when I lived in Florida where we had hurricanes and gas stations would be closed for days or there would be long lines.
Another reason it is not a good idea to let the fuel tank get low is that, if the fuel pump is not in the tank, fuel could slosh around on sharp cornering or on some bumps, which could momentarily un-port the hole in the tank where the gas runs into the fuel-ones. If that happens, the engine could hiccup or stall.
I bought a 1994 Mustang GT when I worked for Saleen. Found out the fuel pickup was at the rear corner of the tank. If you parked with the front lower than the rear & less than 1/8th fuel left the car might not start. I learned to push the car to level ground & the car would start fine.
Depends on the car. My E90 actually pressurizes the fuel system when the driver's door is opened-you can hear the slight buzz of the pump very clearly from outside the car. That way there's no delay for fuel when you try to start.
yep i think most newer cars especially w/push button start are like this.
