Yep, some insurance lobbyists likely convinced some congressmen to treat insurance fraud like armed robbery.

Like I said, I do not believe stealing $250K from an individual is the same as stealing $250K via insurance fraud, for a variety of reasons. Both are crimes, sure, but not equally harmful... Generally speaking, but it depends on the circumstances.

I don't understand this statement. Are you saying every crime should be punished equally...?

... But again, I have no issues with the severity of the punishment in this case. If anything, as I said, I think the punishment was too soft for the reasons I mentioned above. mmarshall's post just set me on a rant, heh. But he's probably right that the kid's rich daddy bailed him out. I do think the Veyron case is an example of a horribly disproportionate punishment, though.

I will concede, though, that saying insurance fraud never deserves any prison time was probably not a fair statement.

But it's a Ferrari, it would've spontaneously combusted by itself anyway.

If a pattern of abuse or misapplication of the terms of the policies can be established, then anti-trust laws, or a complaint to your state's attorney general's office is warranted for investigation or establishing that pattern.

This case is clearly not a case where the insurance company denied the claim. A police investigation on the theft and arson found evidence of an attempt at fraud, charges were laid, conviction and sentencing followed a proper criminal trial.
Call it what you want but I bet you 9 out of 10 people settle for what insurance offers them or tell them as a reason why they will cannot be covered for the incident. That's a math right there. I only stopped having disputes once I found out that buddy of mine is their executive for the region where I have my flood insurance coverage. Since then they have been properly calculating my losses.

With all the videos of Ferraris caught in flame he saw on YouTube, he probably thought it was a good idea. I think good parenting is really important here.

I despise rich people who steal.

If he spent his own money to buy another ferrari, I wouldn't care.

Seriously? Trying to steal $250,000 AND arson aren't enough for you? A year in jail would do this clown good.

.

white collar theft vs blue collar theft. Same difference. $250k is being lost somewhere.
