Default Lexus Makes IS 200t, but What Other Cars Should Get the Turbo Treatment?

Lexus competes head on with BMW in almost every segment, with one notable exception: the BMW Z4. Lexus has no sporty roadster, but it wouldn’t be hard to change that.

CT for high performance, and IS, RC, GS, NX for base engines. Ideally IMO

I think the minimum engine on the RC and GS should be the premium engine from the IS. I think the premium engines should all be turbo too but with 6 cylinders

Considering the RC200t is coming, your dream is already shattered

Twin turbo 3UR-FE with about 650-700hp. Install in the IS, RC, GS, LS, and LX. Up the price by about $50,000 for each model equipped with this engine. If they're faster than the twin turbo V8 cars from Benz, job well done.

That's the thing about Lexus, they don't have anything like the AMG Benz, that is absurdly expensive and over the top. Cars like the AMG Benz, M5 BMW, Audi RS6 and S8, those are what gives those makes the snob appeal, and drives sales for the average joe who can't afford a $100,000 AMG car, but will buy a $50,000 C300 with the AMG appearance/sport package.

I heard. It's okay. The 200t is already proven in another hefty application (NX).

I think it's great the base IS is finally getting a 240hp turbo. Is this an AR-series engine? They should bring back a Torsen LSD option too. The lack of a manual kills it for me when BMW offers a 6-speed package on the 320. Heck, a dual-clutch manual would be ok.

Other models? Let's see:

RC-F with V6-Twin Turbo

IS-F with V6-Twin Turbo

LF-LC with V6/V8 Twin Turbo (and a dual-clutch, please)

LS460 turns into an LS430 or LS400 again with a V8-TT or V6-TT depending on how heavy it is.

GS series.... slim them down a bit, twin turbo them and get them back to what the turbocharged Aristo V300's were like.

CT200-F (not "F-Sport") with 230-245hp turbo four cylinder, Torsen LSD standard (it's a luxury car and shouldn't spin one wheel or use brakes for "torque vectoring" like the Focus ST) and, yes, a manual gearbox taken from the Toyota Auris and Scion iM parts bin... since one exists already.
^^ Or else rework the CT chassis to compete with the Mercedes GLA45 AMG without turning it into a crossover.

LX470 should have a 210-250hp turbodiesel V6 option with the full-time 4WD system. Yesterday. Same for the Toyota Land Cruiser and Highlander. It's unbelievable these behemoths are gas V8 only. Turbos on diesels are fantastic.

I will be extremely surprised if Lexus ever does any of these things in the name of performance

Lexus also doesn't have anything to compete with BMW's X1, 3-series wagon, or the pure-electric i.

A CT 200t would definitely increase sales for the CT. Lexus should also expand the CT line:

CT 200t
CT 200h
CT 300h

And have available F Sport across the CT line...

It appears Lexus is content with the CT line. Lexus should follow BMW and expand the CT line with more engine options, awd, variants, etc, etc...

The Z4 is by no means the only notable exception... mmarshall noted a few, but even that is missing some major ones IMO.

I know it is a different engine (subaru's) due to packaging issue etc. But who else finds it ironic that Toyota is basically stuffing the 2.0t to most of their cars (including Camry) but not in FRS/FT86? Imagine ft86club.com board members grabbing their crotches in pain.

Their 2.0T would make more sense if the FT86 sedan concept went into production as a new-age Altezza or even a new-age Chaser sold globally under the Toyota brand specifically.

In the case of the FR-S/BRZ it's an MSRP issue more than anything else to offer more power. More an issue for Scion's pricing than Subaru's. But the R&D already exists to add a turbo to the flat 2.0L. The inline 2.0T may well fit (considering it's been proven that a 2JZ can fit in an FR-S) but they haven't and won't plan for that in the existing model.

Besides, it may be pricey but there is already a cure-all bolt-on Cosworth supercharger package for the FR-S/BRZ/GT86

....

Anyway, back on topic I agree that the CT200 is the first obvious choice to get turbo treatment whether it competes against the feel of the Focus ST and GTI in performance and feel or all out competes with the performance and feel of the GLA45-AMG in a future iteration.

Apparently an RC200t model with the same 8-speed auto may be headed our way with an F-Sport package that includes a Torsen limited slip diff. So that's hopefully one less to speculate about.

Switching power plants is not necessarily just a matter of yanking out one block and dropping in another. Perhaps the 2.0T can't be fitted to the FT-86's transmission because of hardware or mounting issues/incompatability.
