the issue is out of state gas doesnt have the required additives for Cali so essentially out of state gas is illegal. So you get these shortages when there is a disruption of a Cali facility. Yes it's really ridiculous. If out of state places could sell their gas for $4.60 there, Cali would be flooded with gas and bring the price down.

Filled up at $2.60 in MA today. When is California ever going to come to its senses? Does everyone have to leave? Amazing they keep voting for their own demise.
If you took governments out of the gas business around the world, gas would probably be .99.gal or less. If private business could drill as much as they wanted, where they wanted...

taxes aren't the biggest issue. it's insane and crushing regulations and policies that seem to make the u.s. prefer importing oil and gas than using our own. can't drill offshore, can't drill in anwr, can't build more refining capacity, california having byzantine and 'unique' formulations, turning food (corn) into 10-15% of our fuel because it helps farmers and agribusiness (and politicians). just a sample of the insanity forcing us to continue to rely on reliable 'partners' like saudi arabia, venezuela, isis, and others. oh and let's not forget iran that we're about to let flood the world with more oil while they finish up their nuclear weapons. what could possibly go wrong?

california alone can't save the air. Might as well give up and give us back the cheap gas.
The entire east coast has gotta produce more pollution than california, and they're doing fine with $2.xx gas

Illinois got clanked recently as a refinery went off line unexpectedly.
One morning regular was $2.7x and in the afternoon it spiked to $3.4x.
Something fishy I say.
It came down about a dime since then but the consumer is getting ripped at the moment around here.

The main thing though is it's not the added taxes to keep the environment clean. That is the excuse the execs and oil companies are trying to feed to us. If all the extra cost of environmentally clean gas was added up, we should only be paying 20-30 cents above the national average. Rather, we are at least a dollar above, which keeps getting brushed under the carpet. These crooks know we like to drive and don't give it up. So why not just keep the price as high as possible, make astronomical profits, and feed the excuses? It's the perfect storm.

They blame the same refinery issues for the rise in price in south eastern Canada, and the fact that summer blend is a special regional formulation so it "costs" more. Funny, because I thought winter's oxygenated formulation was the special one. We basically pay what California is paying one you factor in exchange rate and measurement unit conversions. On top of that, there is almost a dollar a gallon difference between regular and premium.
