Hyundai Motor America today reported May sales of 63,610 units, down 10 percent compared with its record-setting month of May 2014. Year-to-date sales of 303,648 units are up two percent for the year.

"May proved to be a bit difficult for us as it appears more customers were out looking for big trucks and SUVs than cars," said Bob Pradzinski, vice-president National Sales, Hyundai Motor America. "With that said, we're putting plans in place to make sure our dealers are best equipped to get the right mix of vehicles into customers' hands during the popular summer selling months."

Bright spots for the month were Elantra, Genesis sedan and Sonata Hybrid, up seven, 18 and 40 percent, respectively.

Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced all-time best monthly sales of 62,433 vehicles in May, marking the second time Kia has surpassed 60,000 units in a single month. The historic May was led by strong performances from the Optima midsize sedan and Soul urban passenger vehicle, as well as increased demand for the Sorento and Sportage crossovers. As part of the “Summer’s On Us” sales event, which began in May, sales of the Sedona minivan reached new heights since being completely redesigned for the 2015 model year, and the family of Forte compacts recorded its best-ever monthly sales total.

“Kia is never afraid to challenge conventional thinking, and the latest example is our launch of the ‘Summer’s On Us’ sales event in May rather than a traditional Memorial Day promotion, and the record-setting results show it clearly resonated with consumers,” said Michael Sprague, Chief Operating Officer and EVP, KMA.

somehow i find it amazing that hyundai/kia sold $125K vehicles in may.

also, the bmw numbers above say 'north america' so i assume that includes canada and mexico too? either way, 31K is impressive!

lexus total number looks good (up 10%) but when you take out models that didn't exist before (rc/nx), numbers are way down. gx is nicely up too, somehow!

CTS should be outsold by the less expensive ATS, and CTS number is close to GS so i'd hardly say it's fading fast.

Combine YTD comes to ~53500 units in 2015 vs ~39000 units in 2014. Net increase, doesn't look like cannibalism between models. Maybe due to new model announced, and some stiff competition by German and NA manufacturers.

SUV sales are going bonkers... small SUV craze is worldwide and two biggest manufacturers dont have their own... funny (Toyota and VW).

As to the RX, probably more due to new model announced... RX is down 1500 but NX added 4000 sales, so net 2500 overall... wouldnt be surprised if some people are also getting Highlander on lower end and GX on other end, both are growing and RX has maybe 1-2 months left before production switches. Not sure if they announced capacity increase for Canadian plant as Rav4 is also heavily supply constrained, they import 30%-40% of them from Japan due to not enough capacity.

As to Audi, they are actually even further behind BMW, MB and Lexus, since those 3 are growing faster than Audi. So I dont think they are doing that good, considering their worldwide position... but then again VW is doing horribly in NA so it may not be their fault.


As to the MB and BMW sales, interestingly enough, lots of their SUVs are down... competition is tough these days.

Lexus 2nd this month, better than MB by a hundred, less than BMW by 1400.

The RC is off to a good start with only the RC 350 and RC F. Hopefully very soon we'll get the RC 200t and sales will really take off not just in the U.S. but worldwide.

BMW does not separate the 4 Series from the 3 Series and lumps them together. I'd love to know how many 4 Series sell...428i, 435i and M4...

For the BMW 3/4 Series, May sales were 12,868 which is crazy...

If you total the ES, IS and RC, 5,553+4,345+1,343=11,241. Comes close to the 3/4 Series...

Audi has the A5, S5 and RS5. I'm sure most sales are of the A5 base model...

Yes, normally volume goes down with price point but the ATS has a useless back seat so it fails a family car

In Feb 2014 the CTS outsold the ATS 4700 to 4300

The newer CTS is pricier so that hurt them but going for 4700 to under 1800 a month in a bit over a year is "fading fast" to me

i was thinking that around 1500 would be reasonable ceiling for the RC, but you are right - with RC200t and lower price, it will sell even better... of course, coupe sales are seasonal and they tend to start high and drop low during the years on market... all together, i thought it would sell around 1k per month.

Unlike with NX, they have good supply of RC, so plenty of them for summer seasons.

Looking over Lexus dealer stock, they are short on NX and GX and IS is also selling briskly... 2.0t will certainly increase sales worldwide, question is just if it will be cheaper than 2.5 V6 or not.

Which is nuts, because you can practically get a CTS for the price of a similarly, or lesser, equipped ATS.

That sounds like an amazing deal, and I bet you can get a gently used one for even less. I wonder if the car suffers from any issues.
