Fun thread! I remember back in the late 80's/early 90's when the whole thing was blowing up. Not able to afford the real deal on my first car, PepBoys was offering a fake coil antenna you could glue to your window to fool everyone. Consequently, I had the first "phone" antenna in the high school parking lot. hehe

An old customer still had a Motorola bag phone up until 2008 when the TDMA network went dark. He was in the golf course construction business and used it in remote locations all over the world, finding it handy because with 3 1/2 watts of power, it could still reach a connection where his smartphone was useless.

We hd a family 1994 Mercedes C280 which had a car phone built into the center arm rest compartment. I remember it having a really ridiculous subscription service through MB. Even without knowing what type of technology resides in that phone and whether it is compatible with today, there would be no way to activate a signal simply because there would be no subscription service.

Probably the best way to go through traffic and have NOBODY give you any guff is to have a dark-colored Ford Crown Vic with a couple of fake antennas. Legally, that's not impersonating the police unless you have flashing lights or a fake uniform on.

Indeed. I have a customer who has been buying ex-CHP Crown Vics for years. He loves the "respect" he gets on the highway.
