Need advice about purchasing a Lexus
Hello guys, I am looking at a 1999 Lexus es 300. It has 171k on it. The guy who is selling the car tells me it's in great shape and he services it regularly. I think I can get it for 3k. Any advice what should I look for and mile wise is this too high for purchase? Advice is greatly appreciated.

I'm borrowing/driving a similar vintage ES300 right now that has near 180k on it. It still runs surprisingly well. The engine pulls strong and the trans still shifts buttery smooth 95% of the time.
My sister bought the car with just under 100k from the original owner in 2005. It was mint, with every record and garaged.
At 171k, you're looking at the second timing belt change. The gauges and/or radio display can be going out. You'll want to do a brake, steering and transmission fluid change/flush if they haven't been done recently.
The struts/shocks/springs could definitely be replaced if you want the car to handle with decent poise. Ball joints, tie-rods, some bushings will also be ready for replacement.
But, at $3k and if it seems solid, go for it. Does he have any receipts for service/parts/etc? I would be most concerned with the second timing belt being done, as i would guesstimate that service at $500+.

Do a thorough check on the transmission, it was the first year Lexus switched to the less reliable U141 transmission.
You can also pull the front valve cover to check for sludge buildup, which was a problem with these engines due to lack of oil changes.
I agree with the rest of things mentioned by jRingo regarding the timing belt, suspension and fluids needing servicing soon.
