Have you ever bought an Extended warranty or bought a CPO and never used the warranty
I bought a 06 lexus gs350 with 37K miles, bought a warranty for 100K miles for around $1350. I thought I would never used it and I threw my money away. At 98K miles I told them I might hear a noise in the engine etc and that I had black circle on my center mirror.
THey ended up replacing the cam shafts, gave me new rear shocks and replaced the center mirror. $3000K worth of work.
The reason I ask is I am going to pick up a car with 16K miles with only 2 years left on the warranty. It is not a CPO but I could get an extended warranty and I know that is expensive.
My question is that have you ever bought an extended warranty and never used it?
I have a chance at a non CPO RLX or a CPO GS350 and lexus CPO is a lot better then acuras, since acura only does a 1 year 12K warranty or something after the original warranty is done, while lexus has a full 100K on everything (non wear items).
I don't want to buy a car and then have to put a lot of money into repairs. I am about to go to HOnda and ask if they can do services on that car.

IMO, it's just an insurance policy and gave me peace of mind

Got about $3-4k out of the one on my RX before it expired (PCM twice, idler/tensioner pulleys, valve cover gasket, two coilpacks). Ironically I never had the failure I anticipated that caused me to buy the policy in the first place (condensation in the headlights).
I'm about a year into the extended warranty on my 335d and have gotten a $1200 Urea tank replacement so far.

I had a 2000 Acura TL. The first claim was that the driver's seat heater quit. It was replaced under the extended warranty.
The second claim was for an auto dimming rear view mirror that went bad (no longer dimmed, and the glass was foggy--I later found out that this was a common issue, and there may have been some reimbursement from the supplier available). The dealer put in my claim and it was denied. I ended up calling Honda North America, and the jerk there claimed it was a "trim piece" which isn't covered under the warranty. As if it was the plastic housing, and not the electronics within the mirror that went bad. Anyway, my dealer agreed that it should have been covered, and they comped most of the cost, and I just paid $50.
But it really turned me off to extended warranties--my fate was decided by some stupid bean counter without a clue, and I had no way to get past him.

I purchased my S550 in 08, an 07 CPO with 7k miles on it. Had a couple of things fixed under warranty. Purchased the extended warranty and haven't had to use it. I guess I could have saved the $5k but it gives me peace of mind. It's ending this year, but if I could get another warranty,I would.

Not sure how the Lexus extended warranty works, but I did what you are thinking about when I bought a 2005 MDX with 23k miles. Just before the warranty expired I purchased the AcuraCare extended warranty. With the Acura warranty it will transfer if the car is sold in a private transaction, or in my case when I traded for my current 2011 MDX, I received a prorated refund.
Re your comment about the Acura one year warranty. That is the standard CPO warranty, but you can buy extended coverage at the time you purchase the car.

I did on my '08 4Runner. I bought it through Toyota, and it brought my full coverage (powertrain and bumper to bumper) up to 100k miles. I ended up trading it in with 60k miles on it, and like wasjr above, received a prorated refund.

In the past I have purchased them and my parents as well. Never got the full value from them.
I also figure that Toyota is good for 200k, so the likely chance of two major failures in that time frame are remote. One major failure is the cost of the warranty.....and Toyota does have a pretty good power train warranty.

Another problem is that a lot of car owners, for whatever reason, after paying for the extended warranty, end up replacing the vehicle after maybe 4-6 years.....they don't keep the car long enough to actually use one.
Given what parts and service run for the upmarket German brands, though, and that standard warranties on BMW, Audi, and Mercedes generally run only 4/50 (even for the drivetrain), an extended warranty might not be a bad investment for those makes, especially if one knows he or she will have the car substantially longer than that.
