Just 1.2 liters big, the 8NR-FTS aims to be miserly rather than sprightly.
Toyota dabbled in turbocharging in the past, but lately they've focused on naturally aspirated and hybrid drivetrains (to no poor effect, mind you). More stringent regulations are catching up, and the company is finally getting on the same page as many of its European rivals with a lineup of boosted mills. The 2.0-liter that Americans get in the Lexus NX 200t is the first in the new generation of engines, but this is the second: a tiny 1.2-liter inline-4.
The 8NR-FTS will see duty first in the Japanese-market Toyota Auris, but there's no telling where it will end up next. Europe is a good bet; it's unclear whether Toyota will decide to federalize it, with that decision reliant on byzantine calculations by Toyota bean counters and regulatory experts.
From a technical standpoint, the engine is roughly comparable to Volkswagen's EA888 series of gasoline and diesel motors, utilizing direct injection and a water-cooled exhaust manifold to maximize thermal efficiency. Toyota also adds VVT-iW, its proprietary intake variable valve timing, to let the four-banger use the Atkinson cycle depending on engine load.
The turbocharger is a simple single-scroll design, but Toyota claims that the engine will be relatively responsive and efficient. Peak power output is 114 hp at 5200 rpm, with 136 lb-ft of torque at just 1500 RPM.
The engine went on sale in Japan today.

8 more unknown new engines to start production/sales in 2015,
We know of 2 more:
- 3.5l GR in Tacoma, with D4S and Atkinson, over 300hp.
- 2.8l diesel in Land Cruiser 200.
I have no idea what 6 others will be. They are only including engines that they consider new, no small changes - for instance 1.4 D4D diesel in Europe got EuroVI emissions and 10% reduction in CO2 output, but was not included in the list above. Also, just because they have new engine in certain cars, it does not mean it will be featured in all vehicles... 1.2t in Japan is only with top of the line equipment with $2.2k surcharge compared to 1.8l engine (but it also comes with more equipment like leather seats). Compared to 1.8l engine, it has considerably more torque and considerably lower rpm range. So it is an upgrade to 1.8l 140hp engine, despite having 112/116hp.

this seems to reference only Toyota engines since RC-F V8 UR is not listed there... i doubt FI V6 is coming this year anyway, all these engines listed above are already in production... they announce them 2-3 months before starts of sales, max.

Maybe upgraded 2.5l AR for Camry? It would be nice with 200hp and 10% more efficient.
I guess LC V8 is going to be updated as well, so thats 4 left... for those 4 left, i have really no idea since they already announced new Avensis, Auris and Corolla new engines. ZR series will get an update for sure, but dunno what car they will show it in, maybe Rav4? Or some "obsecure" (for us), Japanese vehicle.
Seems like we could still see one turbo between 1.2l and 2.0l this year, maybe 1.5l? Or possibly ZR based 1.6l.

i remembered one more, thats Prius of course!... so 5 left to find out.
Maybe upgraded 2.5l AR for Camry? It would be nice with 200hp and 10% more efficient.
I guess LC V8 is going to be updated as well, so thats 4 left... for those 4 left, i have really no idea since they already announced new Avensis, Auris and Corolla new engines. ZR series will get an update for sure, but dunno what car they will show it in, maybe Rav4? Or some "obsecure" (for us), Japanese vehicle.

Turbo hybrids coming soon? VW/Audi are already doing this with 2.0 turbos with a hybrid system. Toyota could do the same if these new engines can also run on the Atkinson cycle. A turbo hybrid GT86 would be lovely...

As to Tacomas, you are correct - it will be 280hp or so, we can see the lowered redline at 6100rpm.
This is actually good - as top hp in Tacoma matters little, by far the best thing is the addition of D4S system, so it should have 10% higher torque/hp throughout the range plus engine seems to be optimized for Tacoma. If they moved usable torque 400rpm below compared to RX, only good things can happen.
