While I'm not sure I'd call it ugly (again, subjective), I'll agree with you that neither this nor the TT, style-wise, is my cup of tea, either (or cup of TT?) . As far as them being direct competitors (or a challenge), maybe, but the auto press has long considered the Mercedes SLK to also be a prime TT competitor, even though the SLK, from what I can tell, sells primarily to a somewhat different group of car buyers than the TT.

is it even an official Mercedes concept? it looks like an awful render to me.

They tend to get pretty accurate about 6-8 months before a car's reveal. Any more than that and you get crap like this. You're right though the Japanese magazines are hilarious.

Yup, onces spy shoots are out the media can do pretty close renders.
