Note the Camry's newfound popularity in a fairly wide belt across the Southeast. Decades ago, you would not have seen something like that in those states, where pickups (especially the F-Series), Chevy Monte Carlo, Ford Taurus, and Dodges ruled. I think that what probably changed a lot of people's mind there (besides its good reliability reputation) was the Camry's entry and establishment in NASCAR. In that part of the country, to be a star in NASCAR is a BIG deal.........people take notice. That's generally where the old phrase "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday" originated.

i am honestly surprised that Subaru is sales leader in 3 states... yes, AWD and all that, but i still find it amazing for a brand that is relatively small (although it is constantly growing, so it is not that small anymore in the USA). Those dealers are likely top notch.

Subies are popular in northern and mountain states for a reason. Dealers are part of it, but I can also tell you that, having owned an Outback myself for some six years, these vehicles are just like a magic carpet in the snow. I once took mine through a six inch accumulation of sleet (ice-pellets), which was even more slick and tractionless than six inches of snow.

I wanted a loaded Outback but the wife wanted a CR-V or CX-5.
Her vehicle,her choice.
Until the last few years,I would never consider a Subaru.I'm sure others feel the same.

Exactly my (only) surprising reaction and in fact it's 4 states! All else, no surprises.

and loads of liberal voters.
A long-outdated stereotype....though, admittedly, there is still at least some some truth to it. Subarus and Saabs were once almost exclusively epopular among environmentalists (even though Subarus generally use more fuel than FWD comparable vehicles), socialists, safety-philes, Lesbians, school teachers, professors, vegetarians, anti-war voters, isolationists, those who didn't mind driving somewhat quirky-looking cars with engines that sounded like wash-machines, and the Elizabeth Warrens of the planet. But that was a number of years ago. Since then, the winter reputation of Subaru products has also made them quite attractive to millions of other new buyers, in addition to the traditional left-wing base.........as the OP map shows.

uh, the article says (and map shows):

Subaru sold 138,790 Outbacks — or about 1/3rd of what Honda moved in Accords — but that was enough to be the most popular new model among retail customers in Washington, Colorado and Maine

Also Subaru has been shown by demographers to be popular with lesbians. Sometimes referred to as "Lesbarus,"

both Washington and Maine are tree hugger states with bad climate, so a Subaru fits that bill perfectly. but i'm kind of surprised Colorado is that 3rd state.
