That interior shot has been floating around for a while now. Strong cues from S class interior for sure but not sure about the three round vents at the top.
Newer Mercedes look bloated because their current design directive is to remove almost every character line that they deem unnecessary. It works well with more unique body types like the CLS. But for basic 3-box sedans like the new S-Class and E-Class refresh, it makes the plainness of the body stand out. Doesn't help that the design language of the newest Mercs was launched by the current A-Class, so now every new Mercedes sedan looks like a stretched version of an economy car.
I've never seen an E-Class get dunked with as many taxi jokes as the new refresh.
it’s for a number of reasons including safety and aerodynamics. the big bloated vehicles are here to stay.
safety i get, but you can make an car extremely aerodynamic sans the edema. anyhow, the new acura tlx, while a mid-sized vehicle manages not to to look bloated in the way that they have proportioned the vehicle. also, in the compact luxury segment, the audi a4 manages not to look bloated and neither does the current lexus IS. the 3 series looks a bit larger than its predecessor but if you were to have never seen its predecessor you wouldn't notice this and it doesn't appear to be bloated, rather it just appears to be approaching the midsized category.
mercedes models, on the other hand, just look fat, slab-sided, and swollen to the max. it's not an attractive look. i think the lack of rectilinear creases has something to do with it as a great deal of mercedes models are very curvaceous which of course floats some peoples' boats but definitely not mine. lexus on the other hand, has taken the rectilinear creases to the max on some of their models, e.g., the ux, nx, rc, rx, etc., which is also not an attractive look.

i totally agree with this. never has the e-class looked more like the pedestrian taxi that one sees all over europe than now. it looks so watered down and so cheap in its design.
Nice, pains me to see these will be 4-cylinders throughout the line up. But the trade-off should be a much lighter car that includes a lot more aluminum in it's overall structure as well (based off of that story linked).
