Lexus has officially unveiled the LF-SA ultra-compact concept at the Geneva Motor Show, a 2+2 study that may preview a future small production vehicle.

Designed at the Toyota Europe Design Development studio in Nice, France, the study’s robust exterior and driver-focused interior are a daring interpretation of the Lexus brand’s design philosophy, L-finesse.

The sculpted body surfaces cast different shadows depending on the viewing angle and time of day, with other interesting details including the three-dimensional spindle grille intertwined with the front fenders and the bold undercutting above the wheel arches.

The rear end features an angular styling combined with L-shaped lamp clusters that mirrors the spindle grille shape.

Inside, the Lexus LF-SA features a sweeping dashboard that Lexus says creates the impression of a roomy interior - even if the concept is only 3,450mm long, 1,700mm wide and 1.430mm tall. Everything focuses on the driver, whose seat is fixed, as the steering wheel and pedals can be adjusted to the driver’s preferred positioning.

The futuristic study features a crystalline instrument panel with black-beveled hologram display and heads-up display with touch pad in the center console. Access to the rear seats is provided by the sliding front passenger seat. No details were offered about the concept's powertrain, but Lexus said the vehicle features automated technologies.

LF-SA stands for Lexus Future Small Adventurer, which means we could see a future production model loosely based on this study.

While the other automakers are comparing horsepower, zero-to-sixty times and top speeds, Lexus is taking a more practical approach to the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, by showcasing its LF-SA city car concept.

To give you some context, the the LF-SA Concept is 135 inches long, making it 9 inches shorter than a Chevy Spark. But it still features seating for up to four passengers. Of course, beyond its small size, the most eye catching thing about the LF-SA is its design. Lexus says the car has a “Time in Design” styling approach where your perceptions of the vehicle will change when viewed from different angles. That is clearly the case with the cars new interpretation of the spindle grille, which on the LF-SA is far more angular than in past iterations of the design element.

Another striking design feature of the LF-SA is its wheel arches – a rare element in subcompact cars. Of course Lexus is still going full bore with an arrow-head motif, as seen in the headlights, daytime running lights and tail lights.

Inside the concept features a sweeping dashboard that helps to emphasize the width of the small car. Despite having four seats, the car is clearly catered to the driver, as the pilots seat isn’t adjustable. Instead the steering wheel and pedals adjust to the person in charge. The passenger seat slides to give access to the rear accommodations. This being a concept, it also includes a futuristic infotainment system with a hologram-style digital display and a wide-angle head-up-display.

The LF-SA, short for “Lexus Future-Small Adventure”, is a minicar with 2+2 seating, and if built its only real competitor would be the Smart ForTwo and ForFour. The overall length is just over 11 feet.

Lexus says the LF-SA is a driver-focused vehicle, reflecting the automaker’s vision that in a future world where technology and virtual experiences are expected to hold more sway, the real driving experience could become the ultimate luxury. There’s no info on any of the mechanicals, however.

Despite its very compact exterior dimensions, the LF-SA has a surprisingly spacious interior. As the vehicle is likely to be used by the driver alone most of the time, the driver’s seat is fixed and the steering wheel and pedals are adjustable. The front passenger seat, however, is slide-adjustable to allow access to the rear. The infotainment system includes a hologram-style digital display incorporated in the instrument binnacle and a wide-angle head-up display.

If a production version of the LF-SA is launched someday, we wouldn’t expect to see the car here in the U.S., as Lexus has repeatedly stated that it has no plans to offer a sub-CT 200h model in local showrooms anytime soon.
