I think Toyota, being a humongous company that they are, needs to have various design languages that cater to multiple markets and cultures.
Of course, aesthetic interpretation will always be different depending on the market. The U.S. is only one market, and such designs like the current 4Runner may be embraced by other markets.
For example, the Vellfire is one of the most loved cars in Japan, but such design language may not translate that well in the U.S.
One disagreeable voice is insignificant to Toyota. If the masses are vocal, then the issue would be different.

The safety-ratings for this vehicles are actually not bad, except for the offset-impact test, which, according to this source/link, was marginal. But, I agree...that picture says a thousand words....more than an official rating.
A lot of that severe body damage (but not necessarily all) may be due to the noticeably thin sheet metal that many newer Toyotas use. But keep in mind that severe body damage in an accident doesn't necessarily mean severe frame damage, even in unibody vehicles, if the unibody is engineered well and uses good metal-alloys.

Cars like these sell very well in South East Asian nations, just because YOU don't like it, doesn't mean people won't love it and buy it.
I can say based on my vacation to Thailand, that in some parts of Thailand, Toyota holds a near monopoly on transport vans similar but older than the Vellfire.

You use quite harsh language, Pamperme. I agree the grille and headlights (to my tastes) are awkward-looking....but the rest of the vehicle is pretty sensibly designed and, IMO, doesn't look bad. And that squarish body-design is good for interior space efficiency.

don't worry, for most , everyone on the road will see the face for less than 2 seconds. It is the rear end that you will see for longer periods, and that needs to please. Does it?
