Default Turbo SC or 911 (996)

So Im on my 3rd SC300 now and i had big plans to turbo it sometime next year however recently I've been thinking a lot and I've figured it would cost me approx $5k to do what i want not to mention all the PITA of actually doing all the work. Having said that i feel like i would be just throwing that money in the trash so to speak because i could never sell the car for nearly what i had in it.... so instead of doing all that ive been thinking about taking that 5 grand and selling the SC and using both towards a decent downpayment on a Porsche 911 (996) Carerra instead. I feel like the Porsche would be slower but it will hold its value better and probably be more fun to drive. This wouldn't be my daily by any means its mainly for nice day cruising and car shows so I'm not too worried about maintenance and reliability thats why i have a GS300 for my daily beater LOL
I know this is a Lexus forum but what do you guys think??

between the two i would go with 996 any day. like you said if resale is in your mind the 996 will be way better. of course it also depends on how much the 996 will be meaning how much loan you will be taking including the interest rate, that's money down the drain too. so that's another variable.

just keep in mind, generation wise, the 996 probably depreciates the most. 993 and 997 both retain values much better

I'd go with the 996 since you've done the SC a few times already. Variety is the spice of life!

I guess i will just wait and see... id really like a 996 but they might be getting too old to get a loan on these days, ive also had my eyes on an E60 M5 for a few years so i may look into one of those also.

^ That was my main concern, I don't think you can get a loan on a 996 Porsche.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the 911, but I really cannot stand the cheapness of the 996. If is this supposed to be some sort of expensive expression of uber German engineering, why are the interior plastics on par with my old 1999 Camaro Z28? If something breaks, why does it cost 5 times what my old Camaro would to fix it?

Can't stand the shared headlights with the Boxter either, I mean how lazy are you that you have a two car lineup at that time and can't design a different headlight housing for each car? Headlight design is one of the most recognizable styling features of a car.

Maybe they see those headlights as the symbol for Porsche

I still remember when the 996 Porsche came out and changed the headlights to the (some called)"fried egg" shape instead of the tradition round/oval, many of their fans didn't like them. So after the 996, they switched back .

The 996 just isn't that desirable from an aesthetics standpoint. I definitely would not take a loan on a 996 - I'd opt for a Cayman 987 (first generation) instead. That being said, a 996 could be decent bang for the buck - just not mine...

I'd personally avoid the 996. Interior is awkward and the quality isn't that good. It has the potential intermediate shaft bearing (IMS) issue that can be catastrophic, especially for the 3.4L

So the E60 M5 sounds like it would be a better bet all around then.

Well, you can also look at it as the 996 also shares the same headlight as the million dollar GT1

996 and Turbo SC's are 2 completely different animals. The 996 would be fast, nimble and a head turner. Also would be expensive OTB, expensive maintenance unless you have some porsche mechanics in the phone book, also expensive insurance wise.

SC turbo projects also end up becoming expensive money pits as well but cost factor is gonna be a fraction of the money you put into the 996. Personally I would go with neither but if i had the money, I would do a 996, if your just looking for a project, then sc300
