The first-generation Honda-designed hybrid power trains WERE a little jerky...the Toyota-designed ones were not. Toyota also designed more-efficient "Parallel"-type hybrids, while Honda used simpler "Series" type units. Parallel-units can run on either gas or electric power alone, while series units are essentially gas engines with an electric motor start/stop backup. Honda, now, in its latest models, is starting to use more refined and sophisticated parallel units.

Engine management is amazing... like a computerized "nervous system" for your car, with ECMs that can control stuff like injection/ignition timing, checking data tables many times a second, and the ability for open-source tuning like what COBB does.

And fuel injectors are a pretty big advancement in regard to replacing carbs since the venturis would ice up, and it was not as efficient, sending out unburnt fuel. Not only is modern electronic fuel injection more efficient and better for the environment, the advent of Exhaust Gas Recirculation and Catalytic Converters, and since 2000 Cold-start catylists developed originally by NASA, has made new cars insanley environmentally friendly compared to any really old vehicles.

Rust proofing is much better as well, I watch those similar car build shows like Fast and Loud and the like and you can see how much rust work they have to do, given they work pretty much entirely on 70s and prior domestic and european cars.

Yes and no. Much of today's better safety record is due not only to safer vehicles themselves, but things such as safer roads, red-light cameras, more thorough vehicle-recalls, lower allowable BAC limits and more vigorous prosecution of DWIs, better care and treatment of paitients after accidents in hospitals, graduated licensing for new drivers, and a number of other factors.
Regardless, safety gets my vote.
