I have tested the Benz C300 2.0 Turbo, the 3 Series in 2.0 Turbo, and the NX200t.
The Benz 2.0 Turbo is the best of the lot, because it is much smoother and quieter, and a very linear torque curve, especially for a turbo.
The BM 2.0 Turbo fails only because it can be caught out with turbo lag, and a peakier torque curve.
I am sad to report that the Lexus 2.0 Turbo is the most "raucous" and "rowdy" of the three by far!
With the Lexus 2.0T, power and torque isn't a problem at all, but the refinement is really well well well below the refinement of the average four cylinder engine from Benz, Beamer and Audi.
Even Toyota's & Mazda's 2.5 liter 4 cylinder, and Honda's 2.4L engine is smoother.
Some research shows that Lexus 2.0 turbo has a squared bore stroke ratio, but no balance shafts, and this block is shared with the Toyota family, but the head is unique.

The lack of balance shafts is possibly to blame for the 2 liter turbo's raucous and rowdy behaviour.
I heard that the 2.5 V6 will be phased out by the end of 2015.

I guess that the poor refinement is caused by the Atkinson cycle at low rpm:s. I feel the same about my CT 200h. There is no regular petrol 4 cyl engine that I know ( at least not from the germans ) that works that unrefined at idle ( vibrations and sound level equals newest gen Audi/VW diesel ) and the sound at higher rpm is not really that nice either. But I must say that the NX 300h is by far the worst sounding 4 cyl I ever heard, its really painful to hear that engine on max load.

quite likely a lot of the difference was due to the vehicles you tested... in my experience, SUVs are much louder than sedans inside... for instance same engine in Rav4 vs Avensis was much, much more "unrefinded" in Rav4.
I think M&T comparo with 6-7 competitors in "small SUV" category, NX was called the most refinded or close to it.

I really don't see the ES needing it (since it has the hybrid alongside the V6), nor the GS (which as a low volume vehicle will do fine with a V6, V8, and hybrid), and surely not the LS. The RX has grown in size so that would be inappropriate.

Maybe this engine will be saved for the sportier compact bunches of Lexi, such as the CT, IS, and RC. So, no need to be "sad", but realize that it's probably appropriate to be a little unrefined to highten the senses of a sportier drive.
