2016 Toyota Tacoma news

I thought the Tacoma had the 2.7-litre 2TR 4-cylinder engine, not the 1AR?
And I assume if Toyota sticks the 3.5-litre 2GR V6 engine in the Tacoma that it will be re-tuned for more torque at lower revs; or perhaps they will update the 4.0-litre 1GR with the same valve-train technology as the rest of the GR lineup.

To me it would seem odd to brag about the new tacoma bring extra rugged, tough, etc and then placing a "car" motor in it

I would think toyota wouldn't just throw the car based 3.5L V6 into a truck without retuning it. That's why they have specific motors for different applications. Could they have just downsized the 4.0 motor and added D4S etc??

Toyota has been making some world class V6 engines for the past 10 years or so, I'm sure the new Tacoma will completely outclass the Colorado/Caynon twins in terms of power and fuel efficiency.

Didnt realize they have TR in Tacoma, but 1AR i Venza, RX, etc...

best part of the D4S, is that old system gives 8% more torque throughout the range, not just at the top. Thats just from D4S... so with new headers, and vvt-iE, as well as new version D4S, V6 should have 10% increase everywhere. Which should be quite noticeable.

I believe you mean that the "stroke is longer in the 4.0L, giving it more torque".
From Wikipedia:
1GR 4.0-litre: bore of 94mm, stroke of 95mm
(square engine with bore/stroke ratio of 1:1)
2GR 3.5-litre: bore of 94mm, stroke of 83mm
(oversquare engine with bore/stroke ratio of 1.13:1)

Tacoma is still using the older 236hp 4.0L V6 and doesn't even have the 270hp unit that the 4Runner got when it was redesigned.
Current 236hp V6 + 10% power increase from D4S that spwolf mentioned above = 260hp.
4Runner's 270hp V6 + 10% power increase = 297hp.
I know that those calculations are hardly scientific and probably not representative of what we'll see in the final product, but Colorado and Canyon have come out of the gate strong, so I do hope that Toyota has plans for 300+hp on the V6 and significantly improved MPG. It would be nice if the 4Runner would also get that engine (and a weight reduction) at it's redesign.

If they indeed do give it full tech for Tacoma, it means that even lower/cheaper Toyota's will get latest tech despite the price.

If Tacoma and 4Runner are slated to get 300hp... I wonder what that means for Camry and Avalon? Honestly, I would rather that the FWD sedans get nominal increases in power and more of a focus on MPG.
300HP FWD Camry... no thanks.
All hypothetical here, but I am very anxious for Toyota/Lexus to lift the curtain on updates for the GR family.

Of course, MPG is there via both D4S and Atkinson Cycle - vvti-iE. I would expect some 20-30% improvement, although not sure how that translates to US EPA.
