Default November 2014 Sales

that time again...

Black Friday, Year-End Deals Boost U.S. Auto Sales In November

Black Friday discounts and year-end deals will probably bring down the average profit per unit for the next few weeks, but U.S. auto sales in November were shaping up to produce both high volumes and high revenues, analysts said.

“Things are lining up to a strong finish for the year,” said Jesse Toprak, chief analyst at Cars.com, in a phone interview.

Black Friday incentives this year included many mass-market brands as well as what has become an annual sales event for luxury brands, he said. Many brands also have 2014 year-end deals that run through the New Year’s Day holiday weekend.

In addition to incentives, Toprak cited better U.S. economic news, a relative break on gas prices lately, easy access to financing for most borrowers, and a raft of new models introduced this fall for the 2015 model year.

“A lot of things are aligning,” to produce higher U.S. auto sales in November and December, he said.

According to the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge Report, the average price per gallon nationwide for regular gas was $2.78 on Nov. 30, down from $3.27 a year ago. Gas prices fell for 60 consecutive days through Nov. 24, AAA said.

Cars.com said it expects U.S. auto sales to hit about 1.29 million in November, an increase of about 3.4 percent from November 2013, and the highest November sales since 2001.

That works out to an eye-catching Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate of 17 million for November, the highest SAAR for the month of November since 2004. The SAAR is an estimate for how high sales would be for an entire year, based on the sales rate for a single month.

J.D. Power and LMC Automotive reached a somewhat lower monthly sales forecast, calling for U.S. auto sales of about 1.26 million for November, at a SAAR of about 16.5 million.

Jeff Schuster, senior vice president of forecasting at LMC Automotive, said in a written statement that based on sales momentum from 2014, U.S. auto sales could hit 17 million in 2015.

The current all-time U.S. auto sales record is 17.4 million, set back in 2000. However, that level of sales was propped up by high incentives and marginally profitable sales to rental fleets.

In contrast, according to J.D. Power retail transaction prices were running at a record average for the month of $30,874 through November 16. That was before Black Friday and before many year-end deals were in full force, but that’s still seriously good news for the U.S. auto industry, and more meaningful that high sales volume alone.

Although there still seems to be some reliability problems remaining with the otherwise-excellent Jeep Grand Cherokee, people seem to finally be getting it through their thick skulls that this is not the same GM or Chrysler that gave us so many shoddily-built lemons for decades.

Honda Division and Honda Trucks also set new November marks, up 4.9 and 18.3 percent, respectively
Honda CR-V smashes previous November best with a gain of 37.7 percent versus 2013
Honda Fit shatters November record, jumping 55.1 percent
TLX and ILX sedans push Acura Cars up 29.5 percent in November while driving an overall division increase
American Honda Motor Co., Inc. today reported a new November Honda and Acura vehicle sales record of 121,814 units, an increase of 4.6 percent versus November 2013. Overall AHM truck sales also set a November record, increasing 12.9 percent on sales of 60,384 vehicles. The Honda brand set a new November best, recording sales of 106,957 vehicles—an increase of 4.9 percent for the month. The Acura brand posted sales of 14,857 units in November, increasing 2.0 percent over the same period last year.

Honda
4 core vehicles in the Honda lineup contributed to a best-ever November for the brand. The newly redesigned CR-V led the Honda division's record month, posting its best November sales ever while Pilot showed fresh strength with a double-digit increase; the 2 vehicles boosted Honda Trucks to a new November record. The Honda Fit also set a new November mark.
CR-V smashed its previous November milestone, with 32,378 units sold last month for an increase of 37.7 percent versus 2013.
The Pilot showed new strength in a robust truck market for November with sales of 9,228 vehicles for an increase of 13.2 percent.
Together, CR-V and Pilot helped push Honda Trucks to a best-ever November, gaining 18.3 percent for the month on sales of 51,735 vehicles.
Honda Fit sales shattered the popular subcompact's previous November best, recording a remarkable 55.1 percent rise on sales of 6,421 units.
"While the market seems to be constantly changing, Honda products continue to march on with strong performances month after month," said Jeff Conrad, Honda division senior vice president and general manager. "Even with plummeting gas prices, compact models like the CR-V and Fit continue to resonate with buyers."

Acura
Acura sedans pushed an overall brand increase in November, led by the new popular TLX and growing momentum from the ILX. Acura trucks also fared well, maintaining strong market performance as MDX continues to lead the Acura division overall.
The Acura sedan lineup rose substantially in November, gaining 29.5 percent for the month on sales of 6,208 vehicles.
TLX was Acura's 2nd best-selling model again in November with over 4,200 units sold, even as tight supply of some models in the TLX lineup kept the new sedan from eclipsing its stellar October result.
ILX gained 4.4 percent for the month on sales of 1,652 units.
"The strength of Acura sedans is clearly on the rise since bringing the hot-selling TLX to market in late summer," said Mike Accavitti, Acura division senior vice president and general manager. "And with demand outstripping supply, we see even more upside potential with TLX and the rest of our sedan lineup in the coming months."

Subaru - 45,273

KIA - 44,936

---

First time this has happened? Subaru is on a roll, with the Outback selling 14k and the other models performing well. Its a wonder they do so well with such a small model lineup. Same goes for Jeep!

General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) dealers in the United States delivered 225,818 vehicles last month for the company’s best November sales in seven years. Total sales were up 6 percent compared to a year ago, retail sales were up 5 percent and fleet deliveries were up 11 percent.

GM estimates that the seasonally adjusted annual selling rate (SAAR) for light vehicles in November was 17.1 million, the highest November SAAR since 2003. Calendar year to date, the SAAR is 16.5 million units, which is the upper end of the 16.0 million – 16.5 million range GM forecasted at the beginning of the year.

Demand in November was robust for everything from smaller cars and crossovers to big trucks – all segments where GM is strong. The Buick brand had its best November since 2003. GMC had its best November since 2001, and the GMC Sierra had its best November sales ever.

At Chevrolet, the Spark, Cruze and Equinox also had their best November sales ever, Silverado had its best November since 2006 and Traverse had its best November since 2010.

“The buzz around Black Friday helped drive strong showroom traffic but there was a lot more at work in the market,” said Kurt McNeil, U.S. vice president of Sales Operations. “More people have jobs and job security, their wages are starting to increase, household wealth is growing and low pump prices look like they’re here to stay through 2015. All of this helped deliver an exceptional month and it will help keep auto sales at very healthy levels going forward.”
Additional November Highlights (vs. 2013 except as noted)

Chevrolet:

The Cruze was up 26 percent, Spark was up 64 percent, Sonic was up 3 percent.
Silverado was up 24 percent, Tahoe was up 10 percent and Traverse was up 14 percent.
Dealers delivered 2,366 all-new Colorados, ahead of plan, with a low retail days supply of 21 days.

GMC:

GMC was up 23 percent.
The Sierra was up 57 percent and the Yukon was up 14 percent.
The Terrain was up 13 percent and 854 all-new Canyons were delivered, which is ahead of plan.

Buick:

Buick was up 27 percent.
Encore had a 72 percent sales increase, LaCrosse was up 71 percent and Verano was up 22 percent.

Cadillac:

Cadillac Escalade deliveries were up 75 percent, with the retail days supply very tight at 16 days.
Sales of the CTS sedan increased 18 percent.

Average Transaction Prices (ATPs):

GM has now posted 26 consecutive months of year-over-year average transaction price (ATP) increases on the strength of new pickup trucks, SUVs and Cadillacs.
ATPs were a record $35,600, according to J.D. Power PIN mid-month estimates, up $790 per unit compared to October and up $3,100 versus a year ago.

Incentives:

Month over month, GM reduced incentive spending as a percentage of ATPs more than the industry average, according to PIN mid-month estimates, and the company has had the lowest incentives of all domestic automakers on an ATP basis in nine of the last 11 months.
GM’s November incentive spending as a percentage of ATPs was 10.4 percent, down 1.2 points month over month, while industry average spending was 9.6 percent of ATP, down 0.1 points.
In November 2013, GM’s incentive spending was 10.2 percent of ATP, and the industry average was 9.7 percent.

Fleet and Commercial:

Fleet sales were up 11 percent.
Commercial sales were up 1 percent, marking the 13th consecutive month of year-over-year growth.

Audi reported November U.S. sales increased 22.0% to 16,640 vehicles, marking the 47th consecutive month of record U.S. sales for the brand. Audi U.S. sales year-to-date increased 15.4% to 162,773 vehicles sold, setting a new annual sales record with 1 month to go in 2014.

Audi in the U.S. has now established annual sales records in each of the past five years. The previous annual record was set in 2013 with full-year sales of 158,061 vehicles. The brand has maintained steady momentum throughout 2014, including the best-ever November results for the month.

“A 5th-consecutive year of record sales reflects the results of steady investment in products and technologies alongside enthusiastic dealer partners expanding the brand profile across America,” said Mark Del Rosso, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Audi of America. “We are confident that Audi momentum will continue to be evident through the end of 2014 and into 2015.”

Through the end of next year, Audi U.S. dealers are on course to spend $920 million on new or expanded facilities to keep pace with growth.

November results were bolstered by sales of Audi luxury SUVs, with the Audi Q7 posting a 14.6% gain on 1,746 units sold for the month, and the Q5 posting a 16.8% gain on 4,184 units sold for the month. Year-to-date sales for the Audi Q7 increased 21.1%, while YTD sales for the Audi Q5 increased 6.5%. Sales of the all-new Audi Q3 were strong with 2,753 vehicles sold YTD.

November sales of the top-of-the-range Audi models maintained pace, constituting one-third of all Audi sales, including the Audi A8 with a 15.7% sales increase for the month.

Steady demand for the all-new Audi A3 continued with 2,511 sales for the month and 19,560 sold YTD, solidifying the A3 as one of top sellers for the brand YTD. The A3 model line was expanded earlier this year with the addition of the A3 cabriolet, A3 TDI sedan and S3 performance sedan.

November is the 16th consecutive month of record sales for Audi Certified pre-owned vehicles, also establishing a new annual sales record. The month marked an increase of 15.4% and a total of 4,168 CPO vehicles sold; CPO sales year-to-date have increased 18% to 42,674 vehicles.

Highlights:
• The 2015 Audi A3 models, including new sedan, Cabriolet and TDI variants, have generated sales of 19,560 units since the 1st of the family line models reached the U.S. in the spring.
• Sales of Audi premium category vehicles (Audi A6, Audi A7, Audi A8, and Audi Q7) increased 8% year-to-date, representing 30.9% of total Audi sales year-to-date and 18% of the Audi year-to-date sales gain.
• Sales mix for Audi S performance variants finished the month at 10.3% for the S3 sedan; 15.8% for the S4 sedan; 38.3% for the S5/ RS 5; 3.3% for the S6; 27.2% for the S7 / RS 7; 15.5% for the S8; 50% for the TTS Coupe and TTS Roadster, and 5.5% for the SQ5 crossover.

Golf family sales in November included 2,149 Golf units, 1,725 Golf GTIs and 119 e-Golf units.

“We are thrilled with the accolades the Golf family of vehicles has received, including the 2015 Motor Trend Car of the Year. These awards applaud the line up’s versatility, quality and value,” said Mark McNabb, chief operating officer, Volkswagen of America. “Partnered with the refreshed Jetta and upcoming redesigned Touareg, the potential for increased showroom traffic looks promising.”

The Chattanooga-built Passat totaled 6,966 units delivered for the month. The Touareg delivered 578 units, 319 of which were Clean Diesel TDI, amounting to 55.2 percent of sales of the model. The Tiguan delivered 2,082 units.
